“Honestly, if I really think about it, I don’t know if I could have done what you did. In a way, you were the one who suffered in my place. I don’t think I could ever sacrifice myself for the family like you did. I would have refused to marry into the Salisbury family from the start.”
“Let’s just let go of all the hate and try to live our lives for real. Wiona, it’s time to move on from that mistake.”
Madison’s eyes were shining with unshed tears as she looked at Wiona, her whole expression full of something gentle and fated. They had been born on the exact same day, their lives twisted together by fate’s cruel joke. Both of them were victims, so what was the point in holding onto old grudges?
Wiona felt something shift inside her, like she could finally breathe again. Was something this good really happening to her? Madison’s words felt honest, nothing fake about them. Wiona had almost forgotten how to trust, but now, slowly, she lifted her hand.
Madison noticed and did the same. The moment their hands touched, they held on tight. They looked at each other and shared a smile, a thousand unspoken feelings passing between them without a single word.
“Thank you,” Wiona whispered. She was grateful for Madison’s understanding and maybe even more grateful for this unexpected little moment fate had given them.
Then Madison’s face turned serious. “There’s something else I need to tell you. I think your real family might have tried to find you at the orphanage.”
“What?” Wiona could hardly process the shock. Could she really have family out there somewhere?
Before they could talk more, Madison’s phone started ringing. She hesitated, then put it on speaker. Jasmine’s voice came through, sharp and a little frantic.
“Madison, what did you do to Ms. Ford? The Ford family just called. They want us to give them an explanation. Did you do something to upset her again?”
Madison let out a bitter laugh. “She’s the one who started it! Why doesn’t Mom ever ask what happened first? I was just—”
Jasmine cut her off with a sigh. “Madison, things have been so messy at home lately. Everyone’s exhausted. You didn’t have the best education, so you can’t really help with the complicated stuff, but could you at least try not to make things worse? I won’t tell your dad or Kyle about this, but I’ll find a way for you to apologize to Ms. Ford. Come home now.”
The call ended before Madison could get another word in.
