A maid called Molly was waiting at the bend in the staircase, her eyes darting anxiously as soon as she spotted Wiona.
“Mrs. Salisbury, you’re finally here,” she whispered.
“You asked me to watch Mr. Salisbury tonight. Not long after he left your room, he went straight to see that secretary he brought with him. They’re in the backyard now, right by the wall in the rose garden.”
Wiona just nodded. “Let’s go.”
Showing up tonight without warning had definitely thrown Kellen off, and Wiona could practically feel the jealousy burning in her. That was exactly what she was counting on. Kellen, overwhelmed and emotional, would pull Jace aside, and he’d rush to comfort her. Kellen was always Jace’s soft spot, his first love, the one he could never turn away from.
And under the moonlight, tucked away in the rose garden, there was no way something wouldn’t happen between them. Wiona just needed to catch them in the act, in front of witnesses. Stir up a scene, expose their affair, and then finally ask for the divorce she’d been waiting for.
Salisbury Corporation had just gone public. The family would never risk a scandal right now. Even if Jace realized this was all a setup, he wouldn’t have a choice — he’d have to go along with it.
Wiona’s heart was pounding as she stepped into the backyard, but before she could go any further, she almost bumped into Grandma Grace, who was being pushed along by Jean.
“Wiona, where are you off to?” Grandma Grace asked.
Wiona stopped right away and bowed her head respectfully. “Grandma, I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Grandma Grace took her hand, her wrinkled fingers surprisingly strong. “Tonight’s such a big deal for the family. Of course I had to come back. I heard you were in the hospital resting, though, so I didn’t feel like staying long. I just made an appearance and came back to get some quiet.”
She peered up, concern etched into every line on her face. “What happened to your head? Let me see.”
Ignoring Molly’s nervous glances, Wiona bent down so Grandma Grace could take a closer look at her bandage.
“Oh, sweetheart, how did you get so banged up?” Grandma Grace’s voice was soft, full of worry.
Wiona was impatient. “Grandma, I actually have something important I need to take care of. Would it be alright if I—”
As she tried to rise, Grandma Grace held her hand even tighter.
“Come with me to the front yard, just for a moment,” she said.
Wiona hesitated, searching her grandmother-in-law’s eyes for an answer. “Grandma, are you… Are you doing this on purpose?” Did she know what was happening by the rose garden? Was she trying to keep Wiona from going there?
Tears glistened in Grandma Grace’s eyes. “Listen to me. Once you go down this road, there’s no turning back. I know you’ve been hurt, and I promise I’ll stand up for you. But think carefully. Are you sure you want to go through with this?”
Wiona suddenly realized everything. Grandma Grace was here to stop her, to cover for Jace. Sorrow filled her chest, heavy and cold. Grandma Grace was the only person in the Salisbury family who’d ever truly cared for her, but in the end, she was still Jace’s grandmother.
Wiona pulled her hand free. “I’m sorry, Grandma.”
She didn’t want to worry the old woman, but if she missed her chance tonight, who knew how long she’d have to wait for another? She hurried toward the rose garden, her steps quick and determined. As she got closer to the wall, she could hear voices.
