“Bianca called the police,” Mason said quietly, “so Daniel’s already been taken into custody. Your mother-in-law is still in the ICU.”
Wiona stared at the phone, her mind blank for a moment. “Wait… you’re telling me Daniel stabbed Alona? Now he’s with the police and Alona might not survive?” She felt like her brain was struggling to keep up, the whole thing sounding too surreal.
“It’s true,” Mason said. “I checked with Molly. She called her friends at the estate, and they all confirmed it happened.”
“Did she find out why? What actually happened?”
“No one’s talking. The staff have strict orders not to say a word.”
Wiona’s curiosity only grew. She had just asked Mason to look into whether Daniel had a kid outside the marriage, but before he could get any answers, Alona set the house on fire. Then after Alona and Bianca caused a scene at the Linscotts, they disappeared. Now, out of nowhere, Alona was back in the news for being stabbed by her own husband. It was all too bizarre. The more outrageous it sounded, the more Wiona felt like there was something hidden beneath the surface, something she needed to uncover. If she could get to the truth, maybe her chances at winning the divorce would finally tip in her favor. She had always known she was missing leverage, and now maybe the universe was giving her another shot.
She was still deep in thought when Mason added, “There’s something else. Someone from the Salisbury estate is trying to sell a painting. Mr. Sullivan already bought it.”
Wiona’s eyebrows shot up. People were selling paintings out of the Salisbury house right now? Was it just taking advantage of the chaos, or was there something more going on?
“Do you know who’s selling?”
“Not yet. Whoever it is, they’re being super careful, using a bunch of middlemen. We only know the painting came straight from the estate.”
Wiona couldn’t sit still. She got up and started pacing the garden, her steps circling until Alice, who had been quietly drawing nearby, looked up in confusion. “Wiona, look, the stars are coming out.”
Wiona paused, reaching out to gently ruffle Alice’s hair. Her eyes landed on Alice’s drawing, and suddenly a thought struck her. “Mason, any news on that painting I asked you to watch for? The one I told you might pop up for sale?”
