Wiona’s stare was sharp and full of danger, and it honestly rattled Jace. He felt a chill run down his neck, spreading cold through his whole body. Seeing Wiona so fierce and unyielding brought him right back to that stormy night when he’d backed her into a corner and she’d fought him like her life depended on it, finally breaking free and escaping with everything she had.
He just didn’t get it.
“Why do you keep running from me?” His voice sounded rough, almost desperate. “Why are you like this now? How did we end up like this? Why do you hate me so much, Wiona? What did I ever do to you, really?”
Was it all because of Kellen? Wiona was his wife. She had the status, the reputation, all the respect that came with it. He hadn’t kicked her out or made her a laughingstock. The one hiding in the shadows was Kellen, not her. What more could she possibly need?
Outside, George had clearly been listening in, and the tension must have scared him because he rushed inside, nearly tripping over his own feet. “Don’t do this, Ma’am, please!” he begged, throwing himself between them. “Mr. Salisbury has been holding everything together by himself. He’s exhausted, he’s overwhelmed. You should be supporting him, not making things harder. The family’s already been through one tragedy. We can’t survive another. Please, you have to calm down!”
Jace’s shoulders sagged. He really was worn out—more than he’d ever admit. The family had been through crisis after crisis, and he was constantly running from the hospital to the company and back again, wishing he could split himself into two, even three people. He hadn’t even wanted to answer Kellen’s calls today. Then, when he heard that Wiona had come back to the Salisbury house, it had just pushed him over the edge.
Why did she leave? Where did she go? Why was she back now? Did she even know what had happened? Why hadn’t she stayed with him when everything went wrong? Why couldn’t she be like Kellen, who always made him feel like he was the center of her world?
He’d been so angry, he’d actually wanted to kill her. But now, seeing the hatred in Wiona’s eyes, he realized she probably wanted the same thing.
“You want to know why I hate you?” Her voice was icy, almost mocking. “Jace, people always know when they’re guilty. Do you really not know why I hate you?”
