Oh, God.
What was this weird, overwhelming feeling? Wiona felt like she could barely breathe. Her heart was pounding all over the place, completely out of control.
Conrad’s voice was low. “This is Jace’s doing too?”
She could tell that edge in Conrad’s tone had suddenly cooled. Her heart shot straight into her throat. Why was Mr. Sullivan even asking about this? On what grounds?
And just then, it hit her again. The air between them was way too intimate, way too charged for comfort.
A man and a woman. Alone. Middle of the night. Just the two of them, in a room.
Was this really okay?
Wiona didn’t answer, but Conrad seemed to have made up his mind already.
Fine. If they wanted to play dirty, he’d show them what real power looked like.
Conrad didn’t say another word. He just started tending to her wound all over again, gently cleaning, applying ointment, and wrapping it up with care. He even dabbed some medicine around her neck, his hands steady and precise, every move both efficient and surprisingly gentle.
Wiona shook her head, remembering how Conrad had explained himself the last time she’d gotten the wrong idea of him. Everything he did was for Alice. It was only because she was W, the person he’d spent three years searching for, the one who could help his sister.
So tonight had to be the same, right? He was only here, chasing her down, because she’d left Alice behind and walked out on the Sullivan family.
Thinking this way made her feel instantly lighter. The weird tension between them finally faded.
She cleared her throat, taking her time to answer. “It’s a long story… Let’s just not go there.”
There was no way she wanted to talk about the mess with Jace. Not even a little bit.
Conrad went quiet.
Was she just running away from the topic?
Honestly, Wiona was even more curious about how Conrad had managed to show up at the Salisbury place without anyone knowing.
“Weren’t you worried about getting caught?”
Conrad looked totally unfazed. “Not at all.”
“The Salisbury family’s security and walls aren’t going to keep me out.”
Once he finished wrapping her wounds, Conrad finally got to the point. “Come on. Leave this place with me.”
Wiona paused, but she still shook her head.
