“There’ll be someone waiting for you outside. Listen for ‘twenty-three.’”

She frowned. Twenty-three? Before she could figure it out, a nurse stepped out and called, “Number twenty-three.”

Wiona raised her hand. “That’s me.”

The nurse led her through a door marked Staff Only. Instantly, the air turned colder. Wiona pulled her scarf tighter and followed the nurse through a maze of corridors and stairs. They finally arrived at a bright, spacious office.
