Dr. Monroe stepped in front of Wiona, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else.
“Is… is it Eason?” he stammered.
The big guy in the passenger seat shot him a glare. “Who else do you think it is?”
“Hurry up. If we’re late, we can’t promise the person you’re looking for will still be in one piece.”
Wiona didn’t hesitate. She climbed into the van.
Dr. Monroe’s hands twisted together, nerves on full display. When he saw her and the bodyguards get in, he swallowed hard, stomped his foot, and forced himself to follow, even though his face had gone pale.
Inside, the van was surprisingly clean. The men up front started the engine and pulled away. Nobody said a word.
Wiona’s phone buzzed. Kyle’s name lit up the screen.
She hadn’t expected him to show up tonight, much less come looking for her. After everything that happened between them, she’d already let it go. She wasn’t interested in reopening old wounds or dragging out more drama. And what’s happening tonight was too important to have Kyle involved.
Kyle kept calling. After the third call, Wiona blocked every number and account he had.
On the other end, Kyle stared at his phone, realizing she’d blocked him everywhere. He tried messaging, texting, every app he could think of. Nothing went through. His grip tightened on his phone until his knuckles turned white.
Neil stood nearby, watching. “Maybe I should try calling her?” he suggested.
He dialed. The call connected. Neil’s eyes brightened. “Wiona? It’s Neil.”
“Did you come to Smokescreen tonight? I’m with your brother and—”
The line cut off. The flat tone said it all. He’d been blocked too.
Neil shot Kyle a helpless look. “I don’t think your sister wants to talk to you.”
He took out his own phone. “I should probably let Jace know what’s going on.”
He stepped aside and fired off a quick text. “Jace, I just saw your wife.”
Jace called back immediately.
Kyle pressed his hand to his forehead, feeling frustration and anger start to boil over. Was this really happening? Since when did Wiona get so stubborn? She used to depend on him for everything, barely able to stand up for herself. After she stormed out of the Morgan house, he’d noticed she’d changed. But he never thought it would go this far. In just a few days, she’d gone completely out of control.
He told himself, he had to track her down tonight. He scrolled through his contacts and made a call. “Elijah, I need you to find someone for me. Now.”
Meanwhile, Conrad had just made it back to Hawthorne Hall. Lewis pulled the car away and Libby came to greet him.
“Sir, Miss Alice says she won’t eat until you and Ms. Morgan come home.”
Conrad paused in the entryway. “Wiona’s not back yet?”
He glanced at his watch. It’s nine o’clock.
