Jace stepped forward, his voice tense. “Mr. Schmidt, I don’t think the Salisbury family has done anything to upset you. Where’s my wife? What have you done with her?”

Elijah, who had called in a few favors to track her down, came up next with a polite smile. “Mr. Schmidt, we know Ms. Morgan was here tonight. We heard she was looking for someone. Would you mind taking us to her?”

Sam was close to losing it. In his head, he was cursing them all out.

Unbelievable. Every last one of them had shown up for Wiona. First Eason, then the Sullivan Group, and now these other heavy hitters. Who was this woman, really? None of this matched the gossip. “Who took her?”

Meanwhile, Wiona had no clue another group had turned up at Esctsay looking for her. She’d only just gotten her phone back and answered a call from Tina.

“Wiona, are you alright?”

“Owen thought he’d be able to get in and help you. He tracked you to Esctsay and was just about to request backup, but then he got an order to stand down and return immediately.”

Tina sounded furious.

“How could they do that? If anything had happened to you, I swear I would’ve taken this straight to the top.”

Wiona kept her voice low. “Tina, this isn’t Officer Bishop’s fault. But thank you, really, for everything.”

“I saw him just now. I don’t know how he pulled it off, but he was there.”

“If my people hadn’t shown up, he would have driven his police car right into Esctsay to get us out.”

“My group stopped him, though. He was all alone. Sure, maybe he could have gotten me out, but he’d be risking his career. He’d probably get suspended or worse. I’m glad I didn’t drag him down with me.”

Wiona still couldn’t believe how much power Esctsay had. Even the police wouldn’t cross them.

So when she left with Conrad’s convoy and saw that lonely police car still waiting by the curb, she actually felt relieved. She gave Officer Bishop a little wave as they passed, and then their group rushed to the hospital.
