The moment Wiona walked through her front door, her phone buzzed with a text from Conrad.

“Wiona, how did it go today? Everything alright?”

“I’m buying dinner tonight,” Wiona said, her voice lighter than it had been in ages. “Pick anything you want.”

Wiona laughed and cut her off. “Just come over. I’ll order everything you’re craving and have it delivered. Let’s have some fun!”

After they hung up, Wiona turned to Molly, who had just set a huge bouquet of flowers down on the table.

“Is your dad really sure about this?” Wiona asked.

Molly nodded. “Yeah. He told me he’s going back to our old hometown. He wants to buy a used house, do a simple renovation, and settle down. Maybe plant some flowers, keep a few chickens and ducks. Basically, he’s retiring early.”

She hesitated, her eyes softening. “Wiona, I know my dad was a jerk before. But he actually saved up a lot of money for me, and he left me an apartment. I’m not angry at him anymore, not really. Does that make me a coward?”

She took a shaky breath and went on. “He explained things, too. Most of what he did was just to keep up appearances for Alona. He knew about some secrets from her past, and she knew he knew. He was scared she’d use me to get to him. His plan was to act like he was forcing me into a marriage, but to give me a chance to escape. He thought if I could run away and start over at a new school, it would be better than being handed off to some random guy Alona picked.”

“He was too embarrassed to tell me all that. And he admitted… sometimes when he looks at me, he thinks of my mom. He said he really did lose his temper with me, and he knows he wasn’t a good dad or husband. He kept making a mess of things, but deep down he still hoped I’d have a better future.”

She blinked back tears, her voice turning bitter. “He risked everything to smuggle Alona and Bianca out of the house and take them to see Sam. He really thought Alona would appreciate his loyalty and let us go, maybe let us have a life outside that family. That was all he wanted. But Alona… she’s ruthless. She didn’t care what happened to him. When Sam said he might spill their secrets, she just let them take him away. Didn’t say a word.”

Molly brushed a tear off her cheek and forced a weak smile. “Then they tried to get rid of me, too. Lured me into a trap. They were planning to sell me off to some trafficking ring in another country. As for my dad, they’d probably take anything valuable from him and then just kill him. Wiona, those people are monsters. That’s all they do, all day long.”

Wiona felt cold sweat break out across her back. “They won’t get away with it. I’m just glad you’re safe now. If your dad wants to disappear, let him go. It’s dangerous for him to stay. But you… you need to keep your head down for a while. Once you get back to school tonight, don’t go anywhere unless you have to.”

Molly nodded, her voice small. “I know. I was thinking the same thing. If I keep coming here, someone could find out where you live.”

“Don’t worry about me,” Wiona said quietly. “I’m going to have Mason assign a female bodyguard to your school. That way I can relax a little.”

Molly’s eyes filled with tears again and she hugged Wiona tight. “Wiona, meeting you is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. You have no idea how much I love you.”

Wiona grinned, a little embarrassed. “Alright, alright. You can show your love by taking care of those flowers you brought in. I’ll get the food ordered.”
