Wiona glanced back at Kyle, her expression unreadable.
“I was never the one who should’ve paid for what happened to Madison and me. If anything, I wish I’d grown up in an orphanage. At least then, none of you could guilt me into believing I’m unforgivable.”
She finished speaking and walked straight into the building, not bothering to look back.
Kyle stood at the bottom of the stairs for a long time, chain-smoking in silence before he finally left.
Once Wiona was sure he was gone, she pulled out her phone and dialed Madison’s number, her fingers moving quickly. No one answered. She tried again and again, but it was the same every time. Kyle’s words echoed in her mind. Madison had been through so much, and even though none of it was Wiona’s fault, she couldn’t help but worry. In the entire Morgan family, only she and Madison truly understood each other.
She decided to head back to the Morgan estate.
Just as she was about to leave, the front desk called out to her.
“Ms. Morgan, you have more flowers!” George announced, waving her over.
Flowers again? Last time it was daisies. This time, it was a huge bouquet of white roses, elegant and striking.
Wiona picked up the card tucked between the petals.
“Wiona, wishing you beauty always. —Ferguson.”
Of course, it was this name again. Ferguson.
Just seeing the name made her bristle. Whoever they were, they gave her the creeps. Always lurking in the shadows, never daring to show their real face.
“Ms. Morgan, do you want us to bring these upstairs for you?”
“No, thanks. Please just throw them out,” Wiona replied, her tone clipped.
She had no interest in anyone who hid behind anonymity. Still, the whole thing put her on edge. Who exactly was Ferguson? The thought of some stranger watching her from afar made her skin crawl, so she called Tina right away.
“Tina, I need a favor. Can you ask Mr. Bishop for some help?”
Tina sent over Owen’s contact info, and after Wiona added him, she snapped a photo of the flower card and sent it to him.
“Mr. Bishop, I checked. The card’s from a flower shop on the north side. Could you find out who ordered these for me?”
Owen replied right away. “I’ll look into it.”
Now that the police were involved, Wiona felt a bit better and tried to push the whole thing out of her mind for now.
She made her way to the Morgan estate and had just parked outside the gate when a shadow suddenly dropped down in front of her hood.
She squinted through the windshield and realized—it was Madison.
“She’s escaped!” someone shouted from inside the yard. Madison scrambled to her feet, eyes wide when she recognized Wiona behind the wheel. She ran over, breathless with excitement.
“Hurry, unlock the door!”
Wiona hit the unlock button without thinking. Madison yanked open the passenger door, threw herself in, and buckled up.
