Madison hadn’t even finished her sentence when she watched Wiona grab a huge handful of meat and dump them all into her bowl.

“It’s really good,” Wiona said, a little surprised.

Madison hesitated. “No, of course not.”

Wiona glanced at her. “You just happened to stop by today. Was it because of me?”

Wiona nodded, honest as ever. “Yeah, I went back for you. I heard you weren’t eating and I got worried. You wouldn’t answer your phone, so I had no choice but to check in.”

Madison’s eyes went wide, caught between surprise and gratitude. “I can’t believe you’re the one who cares about me the most.”

Wiona looked at her. “Don’t they care about you? I don’t think it’s that simple. If they didn’t care at all, Kyle wouldn’t have found me and told me about you.”

Madison let out a bitter sigh, “Maybe he was really missing you. They’re all so conflicted. They want to make up for what they did to me, so they act cold to you. But deep down? They miss you. I’ve heard Mom call your name in her sleep, more than once. Dad sometimes calls me by your name. Even Kyle — you probably think he’s the most heartless, right? But he sneaks into your room all the time. He doesn’t let anyone else touch any of your things.”

Wiona’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Seriously? They do that?”

Madison just gave her a knowing look. “That’s who they are. They can’t admit to themselves that you’re the one they care about most, so they act even colder, like they’re punishing you for it… and me too, honestly. The sad part is, they pretend to love me but they’re always comparing me to you. In the end, they haven’t treated either of us right. It’s a mess.”

Wiona didn’t know what to say. For once, she was at a loss.
