Wiona had no idea how she ended up out here. One minute she was lost in her thoughts, the next she was sitting in the garden, clutching a paintbrush and obsessively working on a canvas.
“Wiona, is that my brother?” Alice’s voice broke through her trance. She pointed straight at the face Wiona had just painted, recognizing it without hesitation.
Wiona blinked, finally noticing what she’d done. She’d drawn that blurry face from her dream, but the lines and angles were definitely Conrad’s. Her heart started racing. She grabbed a big glob of black paint and smeared it all over the canvas, ruining it in seconds.
Alice gasped, her disappointment obvious. Wiona felt a pang of guilt, but she couldn’t stop now.
“Ms. Morgan, are you alright?” Remy asked, picking up on her distress.
Wiona stood up quickly. “Sorry, I just remembered I have a prenatal appointment this afternoon. I should get going.” She didn’t wait for a response. Without looking back, she walked away, ignoring Alice’s cries as she left the garden behind.
When she got back to her room, the reality of what she’d just done hit her all at once. She washed the paint from her hands, then grabbed a small bag and threw in only the essentials. No clothes, nothing that would make it obvious she was leaving. She couldn’t risk anyone noticing. She paused at the door, hesitated for a second, then slipped out quietly, not leaving a single note behind.
As her car pulled away from the estate, Conrad stood by his window, sipping tea. He saw the car go but didn’t give it a second thought. Half an hour later, Donna came in. “Sir, Ms. Morgan left again. She said she has a prenatal check-up this afternoon, so she might not be back until tomorrow.”
Prenatal check-up. So it really was her who left. Conrad did the math. Sixteen weeks along now. Time had flown by. Some things, he realized, couldn’t be put off any longer.
He picked up his phone. “Korey, make sure Ms. Morgan gets the best care possible at her appointment. Whatever she needs, arrange it.”
