Alona shoved him away, her face twisted in pure annoyance. “Stay away from me. And stop calling me that—it’s disgusting. Sam, you owe me and Bianca. You did me a favor, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to fall at your feet.”
Sam’s hand hovered in the air, longing to touch her, but he stopped himself. Instead, he leaned in, his eyes fixed on her with a look that was almost predatory. “But you made a promise. You said you’d let me relive that night... the madness, the rush. I’ve never forgotten it, not even for a minute.”
He dipped his head, breathing in the scent of her hair. “I’ve been with plenty of girls over the years, but none of them ever got under my skin like you did. What did you do to me, Alona? Was it some kind of spell?”
Alona jerked away, unable to hide her disgust. “Stop your nonsense. If I hadn’t been drunk that night, do you actually think I’d have let you touch me?”
Sam laughed, a deep, rough sound. “Fine. Back then, you were the queen of Stonehill. Untouchable. And me? I was nothing. If I’d had the power I have now, I would have made sure the entire Salisbury family never had a moment’s peace. Unless you married me, I wouldn’t have let go. But you were ruthless, weren’t you? You had my child and pinned it on your husband. You let me miss out on the truth for twenty years.”
He watched her, voice softening just a little. “I get it. You’ve always looked down on me. If you weren’t desperate for me to go after the Linscott family and fight for our daughter, you’d never have told me about Bianca. But it’s not too late. We’re still young. There’s still time for us, don’t you think?”
Sam gently picked up a strand of her hair, pressing a kiss to it before letting it fall. Alona shivered on the inside. A future with him? Not in this lifetime. She was already regretting everything.
She’d left the Salisbury estate after setting that fire to protect Bianca. All she wanted was to use her status as Mrs. Salisbury, to force the Linscotts to accept her daughter. It was the least they could do, after what Darian did to Bianca. With her reputation in ruins, the Linscotts were the best option.
Daniel had been embarrassed. He only wanted to ship Bianca off abroad, but Alona refused to let her daughter suffer or let the insult slide.
