“Should I still call you Mrs. Salisbury in bed?
“I can’t do that.
“You’re my daughter’s mother, which makes you my girl. Or... do you want me to call you babe instead?”
Alona almost gagged. She and Daniel had never been this cheesy, not once in their whole lives together. Daniel’s gentle side wasn’t something she ever got to see, and honestly, she was not the clingy type who liked all that lovey-dovey talk anyway.
“Enough. It’s time. I want to see for myself just how miserable they are now. They humiliated me so badly I couldn’t even raise my head. It’s their turn to kneel at my feet, to desperately beg for my forgiveness.”
With that, Alona shoved her way out of Sam’s arms. She lifted her chin, proud and stubborn, click-clacking out on her sky-high heels.
When she reached Bianca’s room, her daughter was sulking, refusing to eat. As soon as she saw Alona, Bianca rushed over, her eyes red and desperate.
“Mom, can we go home? I don’t want to stay here. I don’t want to be his daughter. Mom, I miss Dad. I miss my brother. I even miss Grandma…”
Alona’s face darkened with anger. She jabbed Bianca’s forehead hard with her finger.
“You’re so useless. Do you really think any of them care about you right now? If they did, they wouldn’t have sent you away in the first place, and they definitely wouldn’t just ignore you. Especially your father. He probably hates you now, so you’d better get over it.”
Bianca sobbed, “What about my brother? He’s still my real brother, isn’t he?”
The mention of her son made Alona’s expression even colder.
“He’s the most heartless of all. Remember how we were humiliated at the hospital? He just stood there and watched like it was none of his business. We’re his family, his mother and sister. Even if we made mistakes, shouldn’t he have taken our side? Now your father’s brought home some illegitimate son. Where does that leave your brother in that house? For the sake of the Salisbury family, he broke my heart.”
Alona was hurting, but deep down she knew Jace had no choice but to fight for his place. She was just venting, not truly angry at her son. Bianca, however, took every word to heart.
“Why do I have to suffer for all the mistakes you grown-ups made?” Bianca cried out, her voice breaking. “Why did you have to betray Dad and drag me down with you? I’ve lost everything. Now I’m nothing but an illegitimate child, the daughter of someone nobody respects… I hate you!”
Alona slapped her, sharp and loud.
“I’m your mother. If it wasn’t for that so-called mistake, you wouldn’t even exist. You’re so stupid.”
Her chest was heaving, anger pulsing through her. Seeing Bianca clutch her face and cry so hard was almost unbearable. Maybe it was time for her daughter to see something truly cruel.
“Take her.”
Alona led Bianca out into the night. Sam was waiting and personally took them to an abandoned construction site.
