“He’s my son!” Alona held Jace’s face in her hands, her voice breaking with pain. “Jace, I’m so sorry. I messed up. I did everything for you, but I just ended up hurting you. Please, forgive me. Whatever you say, I’ll listen. I won’t take them back, okay?”
Sam muttered under his breath, “Sentimental fool.”
He strode over and rested his hand on Alona’s shoulder, letting out a long sigh. “Well, that’s it. You’ve just exposed yourself. What are you going to do now? Let them leave and tell everyone you’re a kidnapper?”
Alona’s crying faltered. “I… I know.” She realized she was completely exposed. There was no way to hide anymore.
Before Alona could even turn around, Grandma Grace exploded, her voice shaking with rage. “Alona! So it was you, you idiot! I’ve never seen someone as stupid as you! How could you team up with outsiders to kidnap your own mother-in-law, your daughter-in-law, and your son? You’d stoop so low for money? I’d rather die and donate everything I own than give a cent to you—”
Grandma Grace was so furious she almost couldn’t catch her breath.
Alona shook as the insults kept coming. “You are yelling at me? Am I your daughter-in-law, or your worst enemy? Why do you hate me so much? I’m done taking this, you old bitch!”
Alona stormed up to Grandma Grace and yanked her up like she weighed nothing. “Listen to me, old bitch. You’re in my hands now. I don’t have to treat you with respect anymore. I could end you right now…”
She wrapped her hands around Grandma Grace’s neck. Grandma Grace’s face turned bright red as she struggled to breathe. Just when it looked like Alona was really going to choke her, Jace, who had somehow gotten free from the ropes, charged over and slammed into them, knocking them apart.
Grandma Grace hit the floor and didn’t move. Jace dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms, panic all over his face. “Grandma! Grandma, are you okay?”
Grandma Grace opened her eyes slowly and looked up at him, her face full of heartbreak. “Your mother’s lost her mind… Jace, don’t worry about me… just run…”
