This was the first time Bianca truly realized just how scary Wiona could be. She was pregnant, her babies bump obvious, but she still had the guts to pull something like this. Where did her courage come from? How could she be so sure she’d get away? Sam had so many people working for him. Did Wiona really think they couldn’t find them? And she’d recognized Bianca right away, without missing a beat. Was she not afraid of dying?
“The Salisbury family and my dad have already abandoned me anyway.” Bianca’s thoughts spun as tears rolled down her cheeks. “What does it even matter whose daughter I am?”
Wiona rolled her eyes. “Your dad’s sick. The first thing he did when he woke up was send people to look for you. And Jace is the eldest son. As long as he’s around, there’s still a place for you in that family. You’re not like me. I was just the Morgan family’s fake heiress. You have real family blood in the Salisburys. Whatever. I don’t have time for you. Behave, or I’ll take care of you right now.”
Wiona was just putting on a tough act. She wasn’t really trying to comfort Bianca, just to shut her up. She was worried Bianca might suddenly lose it and give away their hiding spot. Daniel hadn’t actually sent anyone to look for Bianca. Wiona had just made that up. But Bianca seemed to believe her, which gave Wiona a second to look around.
About fifty yards ahead was a fence. Past that, she could hear cars roaring down the highway. Above them, a high-speed train thundered by every twenty minutes or so, the noise so loud it drowned out everything else. It would be the perfect cover to run through the grass without anyone hearing.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed from the base of the abandoned building. “Over there!” someone shouted. “Send a group that way! Check the grass over here too!”
Bianca’s nerves were shot. Part of her wanted Wiona to get caught, to pay for dragging her into this mess. She hated how clever Wiona acted, how she always seemed to have a plan. But another part of her was terrified. If they got caught, Wiona might just kill her before anyone else could. Besides, if what Wiona said was true, maybe her dad and brother still cared. Bianca didn’t want to cut herself off from everything for good. Her place in the world already felt shaky enough.
But it looked like Wiona was out of options. Men were closing in, searching through the grass. They’d be found any second now.
Wiona felt the pressure building. She couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. She only had one shot at escaping. If she failed, she was dead for sure. She watched the time, waiting for the right moment. Suddenly, a train roared overhead. Without missing a beat, Wiona yanked Bianca up, and the two of them crouched low, moving fast through the field while the train’s screeching wheels masked their movements. They reached the edge of the grass just as the noise faded. Wiona pulled Bianca back down to a squat.
Bianca tried to make a move, but Wiona was faster. She pressed a sharp stone to Bianca’s neck, slicing her skin just enough to draw blood. Bianca winced, shaking, and quickly gave up on her plan. Wiona glared at her. “Next time, it’ll be your face.”
Bianca’s hands flew to her face. She spent millions each year to keep it perfect. The thought of even a single scar made her feel sick. She could only crouch there, helpless, doing whatever Wiona said.
“Wiona, if I ever get the chance, I’ll make you suffer a thousand times over for what you’ve done to me today.” Bianca hissed.
