Jace didn’t have a second to think. He shoved Wiona and Grandma Grace into the thick grass, piling weeds over them until they were hidden, then scrambled to his feet.

“You’re not getting to them while I’m here!” he shouted, throwing himself straight at the men in black.

He knew how to fight, that much was clear, but it wasn’t enough. There were too many of them. They took him down in seconds, pinning him to the dirt, kicking and punching with no mercy. They meant Wiona. They had no idea she was right here, hiding in the grass. She could have run. She could have left them behind. But she stayed.
