Grandma Grace let out a furious scream, blood spilling from her lips. Wiona knew right away things were bad. She wrapped her arms around her. “Grandma Grace, please, don’t say another word. You need to rest. Your health matters most.”
Grandma Grace pulled her in even tighter. Seeing that Wiona still cared, she broke down, sobbing even harder. Maybe it was because she knew they’d reached a dead end, or maybe she was grieving her own mistakes, knowing her selfishness had dragged Wiona into this danger.
Her voice trembled as she whispered each word, “Sweetheart, when you get the chance, run. No matter what happens, Jace and I will hold them off. If you can make it over the fence to the highway, you’ll have a shot…”
The highway was just beyond the fence. It was risky, but it was the only way out. Grandma Grace had already decided she and Jace might die tonight if that meant saving Wiona and the twins she carried. That was all that mattered. That was the future of the Salisbury family.
Wiona just shook her head, silent.
Even after Grandma Grace’s desperate plea, and Jace crawling toward Wiona, the gang wasn’t about to let them go. One of the men pulled out a knife, moving in, ready to finish Jace off.
That’s when sirens cut through the night. At first it was one, then several, getting louder and closer with every second.
Panic hit the group.
“Wait, what? Didn’t boss say he’d talked to the cops? That nobody would show up here tonight, no matter what?”
“It really is the police! And there’s more than one car…”
“What are you standing around for? Run!”
“Don’t freak out, they might not find us under the bridge. Grab them all, let’s go!”
The thugs rushed forward, hauling Jace up, and were about to go for Wiona and Grandma Grace. Suddenly, a low rumble grew overhead. Everyone looked up. A helicopter was dropping out of the sky, its spotlight slicing through the darkness, wind whipping across the empty field. Their hiding place was lit up for all to see.
The helicopter hovered, then started to land. The men in black scattered, unsure what to do. Jace broke free and scrambled back to Wiona and Grandma Grace.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here. I’ll protect you.” Jace's mouth was bloody, his face swollen and bruised, but he still held onto what little pride he had left. He stared at Wiona, his eyes shining with emotion. “Wiona, if we make it out of this… can we start over? I’m ready to let go of the past. I’ll be a good husband, I promise…”
Wiona knew Jace had shown real courage tonight. No matter how this ended, he’d acted like a man. But for them, there was no going back.
