Conrad stood six foot two, with legs that seemed impossibly long. He wore black from head to toe, a short leather jacket hugging his frame. A pilot’s helmet and headset covered his head, and a pair of night-vision sunglasses hid his eyes. He looked every bit the definition of cool and untouchable.
The moment he spotted Wiona, he walked straight toward her. Jace and Grandma Grace stared in shock as Conrad stopped right in front of them. He dropped down on one knee, looking Wiona over from head to toe. Only when he was sure she was okay did that dangerous edge in his expression start to fade. He took off his sunglasses, and for the first time, faced Jace directly.
“Sorry. I’m here for Ms. Morgan.”
Without waiting for a response, he reached out and swept Wiona into his arms. He stood and turned to leave, not bothering with explanations.
Jace’s shock turned fast into fury. “Mr. Sullivan! You can’t just do that! Wiona is my wife! What are you doing?”
Conrad stopped and glanced over his shoulder. “Mr. Salisbury, if I remember right, you’ve already filed for divorce. Sure, it’s not finalized, but that doesn’t mean Ms. Morgan can’t move on, does it? And as for staying with you...” He let out a cold laugh. “Can you protect her? Or did you drag her into your family’s mess? Let her get kidnapped with you, terrified for her life? You can’t even protect yourself. Don’t drag anyone else down with you. Ms. Morgan is someone I value. If you can’t protect her, step aside and let someone who can do it. Someone who wants nothing more than to keep her safe.”
He ignored Jace’s shouts and carried Wiona straight to the helicopter.
“Conrad! This is too much! It was you last time, wasn’t it? You were the one behind it! She’s my wife, give her back! Wiona, don’t go! How can you do this to me? I’m your husband! When did you... How could you...”
Jace tried to get up, but after two steps he collapsed again, too injured to keep going. Blood dripped from his mouth as he coughed.
Korey shook his head and walked over. “Mr. Salisbury, just stop. Everybody knows you never appreciated Ms. Morgan. You brought your mistress into your house. And your family just let it happen, turning a blind eye every time you hurt her. So honestly, none of you have any right to ask her to stay.”
He paused, making sure Jace heard every word. “There aren’t anything between Ms. Morgan and Mr. Sullivan yet, but thanks to you, they already share a real connection. What kind of connection? You’ll find out soon enough.”
Korey turned to leave, then stopped and looked back. “You know why the latecomer wins sometimes? Because they fight for what they want.”
