Daniel’s phone slipped from his hand and hit the floor with a loud clatter. For a moment, his whole body shook, and then he crumpled right down, sitting heavily on the ground. Isaac rushed into the room, his eyes wide with panic. He hurried to his father’s side and tried to help him up. “Dad, what’s wrong? Dad, talk to me.”
Daniel felt like the world had closed in on him. His mother was gone. His son was lying in a hospital bed, barely hanging on. Salisbury Corporation was under attack from every direction, and it felt like the whole family legacy was about to fall apart right in front of him. The worst part was knowing that all this chaos had started because of the woman he’d called his wife for thirty years. He hadn’t even known about her and her lover’s plan to kidnap his own mother, not until Jace and Grandma Grace were rushed to the hospital together.
Only now did it hit him, just how much he had failed. Failed as a husband, a son, and a father. He was supposed to be the one steering the Salisbury family, but all he’d done was watch as everything he cared about started to crumble. His chest tightened, anger and heartache fighting for space. There was a bitter, metallic taste in his mouth he couldn’t swallow away. As Isaac helped him to his feet, Daniel stumbled toward the hallway, barely steady.
He shoved open the door to Jace’s room just as his eldest son looked up from the newest headlines on his phone. Without thinking, Daniel lunged forward and grabbed Jace by the collar, his voice raw. “Why would you do this? Are you trying to destroy this family with your mother? You’re a Salisbury too. Why can’t you do what needs to be done, the way I did? Tell me, why are you letting everything fall apart?”
He staggered backward, nearly falling until Isaac caught him again.
“Dad, please, calm down. This isn’t Jace’s fault,” Isaac said softly. “Maybe… maybe love is more important to him. He just doesn’t want to repeat what happened between you and Mom, so he’s chasing after his real feelings. Maybe that’s just how it is, Dad.”
Daniel opened his mouth, ready to snap back, to call it foolish, to tell Isaac to stop talking. But the words wouldn’t come. He knew if he pushed too hard, he might lose his younger son too. His eldest was already lost, always caught up in one love mess after another. That was why Daniel had pinned all his hopes on Isaac, bringing him back to start over. But now Isaac was talking about his mother, about the love Daniel used to have for her. Daniel had long since buried those feelings, trading them for cold practicality and a focus on the family business. He wanted stability, prosperity, a future for the Salisbury name. But now, it all felt like it was slipping away. There was nothing left.
