“You mean… I’m actually divorced?” Wiona stared, completely stunned. How could she not know something this huge?
“Maybe there’s some kind of mistake?” she asked, trying to make sense of it.
Conrad gave her a sharp look. He understood she wasn’t exactly upset about the divorce, but he still narrowed his eyes and teased, “Are you feeling a little… regret?”
“Regret? Please.” Wiona rolled her eyes. “It’s just weird, that’s all.”
Honestly, she’d been dying to get her official divorce papers from Jace. The thing was, she didn’t have them. Everything was supposed to being processed, so what was this about being divorced already? What did the police mean?
Right there in front of her, Conrad pulled out his phone and called someone at the registrar’s office. “Hi, can you check and confirm Wiona Morgan’s marital status for me?”
The person on the other end seemed to recognize his number. Their voice was extra respectful. “Good afternoon, Mr. Sullivan. Ms. Morgan’s status is officially listed as divorced and single.”
Conrad looked at Wiona, and the shock written all over her face filled him with a quiet kind of satisfaction. He didn’t end the call, instead asking the question that was burning in Wiona’s mind. “But Ms. Morgan herself had no idea about this. Can you see who changed her status?”
The person hesitated, clearly choosing their words. “I’m sorry, Mr. Sullivan, I can’t access that level of detail. I can only see that it was processed three days ago by someone with internal permissions. Oh, and Ms. Morgan’s divorce certificate is still here at the office. Should we mail it to her, or will she come pick it up herself?”
Wiona just stood there in disbelief. So it was real. She had a divorce certificate. She was really divorced. She honestly felt like she was floating, like it was all just a dream.
“I’ll pick it up myself,” she managed to say. She wanted to end this marriage properly, so she decided to go to the office herself the next day.
After hanging up, the feeling still didn’t seem real. Was that it? Was she really divorced?
Conrad, meanwhile, barely reacted. He just turned and headed into his study, calling over his shoulder, “Since you’re here, you might as well come in and do what needs to be done.”
Do what? Wiona followed him in, a little confused.
She found him standing by the window, back to her, doing something with his hands. Then he turned around slowly and, with almost theatrical calm, slid his shirt off his shoulders.
Wiona’s eyes went wide. She gasped, slapped her hands over her eyes, and felt her cheeks go up in flames. Her mind was full of nothing except Conrad’s ridiculously perfect upper body. Her heart was going wild.
