Jasmine looked completely lost. “Kyle, Wiona, what is going on? What are you two talking about?” She turned to her daughter, voice trembling. “Wiona, just tell me. Did something happen to you? Did someone hurt you? Or did you… did you make a mistake, do something that would shame the Salisbury family?”
Jasmine’s voice grew sharper, desperate. “Wiona, I’m your mother, talk to me! If you messed up, we can fix it. But if those kids really aren’t Salisbury blood… we can’t let this go on. Please, listen to your brother and your father. Let’s go to the hospital and take care of this, then we can pretend nothing ever happened. Please, honey, just do what I say, okay?”
Jasmine reached for her, but Wiona stepped back fast, clutching her belly. “No.”
Her voice shook, but her eyes were steady. “They’re my kids. Why should I care what everyone thinks? I’ve never done anything to betray Jace. He betrayed me. Why do you all assume I’m the one who made a mess, that I’m the one who’s done something wrong? I didn’t do anything! Aren’t you supposed to be my family? My mom, my dad, my brother? You never even try to understand, you just decide I’m guilty. Jace messes up again and again, and none of you ever stand up for me. When he cheats, it’s just some romantic fling. When I have my own children, it’s unforgivable? How is that fair? Just because I’m a Morgan? You say it’s all for my own good, but really you just want to control me. You once told me I wasn’t even your daughter and now, suddenly, you want me back like nothing happened. Did you ever ask if I wanted that? Did you even ask if I still want you as my family? Well, let me make it clear—I don’t. I cut ties with you the moment you threw me away. And one more thing. My children aren’t some kind of mistake. They’re a blessing. I won’t let you hurt them.”
She moved until her back pressed against Madison, who stood firm behind her, arms out like a shield. The two of them faced the Morgan family together, drawing a clear line. In that moment, it felt like the room split in two—every ugly thing the Morgans ever did in the name of love was suddenly out in the open.
