After he finished speaking, Kyle closed his eyes, looking completely defeated. This was the kind of trouble the Morgans just couldn’t handle. They didn’t have the power. They didn’t have the confidence. In Stonehill, even the Morgan family had to avoid that name. If they tried to fight, they could lose everything they’d built.
It wasn’t that Kyle lacked confidence. He just saw things too clearly. He knew exactly how much power the Sullivan family had—not just in Stonehill, but across the whole country, maybe even the world. The Sullivans were at the very top. So when he found out it was them, he felt more than just rage and shock. There was also a sense of powerlessness. He honestly should have realized sooner. He’d already heard that surname the last time he chased Wiona to Esctsay. He hadn’t thought about it much then. He never imagined his straight-laced little sister Wiona would end up pregnant by someone who wasn’t her husband. And that someone was from the Sullivan family, the most intimidating, mysterious clan in all of Stonehill.
Conrad was supposed to be untouchable, always distant, completely uninterested in girls. When did he get interested in his sister?
Conrad acted so proper in public, but in private, he did something like this? And now, for Wiona’s sake, he was making a huge scene at the Morgan family’s door. He wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore. Kyle’s chest burned with frustration. If Cole hadn’t insisted on facing things himself, Kyle would never have said any of this out loud.
Wiona, meanwhile, didn’t have time to wonder what Kyle was thinking. She was still stuck on what Leila had just said, barely believing her ears. Did she really hear that right? A marriage proposal? She turned to Leila, completely confused. “Did you say a marriage proposal? Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”
Kyle let out a cold laugh. “You still have the nerve to ask? At this point, why are you still pretending?”
Wiona took a deep breath, clenched her fists, and just lost it. She threw a punch at Kyle’s jaw, hard. “Shut up! Did I ask you? Kyle, I used to respect you more than anyone. But from now on, you’re the person I hate the most. Just as much as Jace!”
Her hand trembled from the force of the punch, but it felt good. The words felt even better. The anger and disappointment in her eyes cut deeper than her fist ever could.
He was stunned. She hated him? As much as she hated Jace? She wouldn’t even call him her brother anymore? Was she really turning against him?
“Wiona, you—”
