He started to explain, his voice carrying a nervousness he’d never felt around Wiona before. “Wiona, when the truth about the switched daughters came out, I just couldn’t accept it. That’s why I said things I didn’t mean. I never really wanted to push you away.”
Wiona just frowned. “There’s nothing left to talk about.” She glanced at Madison. “Kyle, is this fair to Madison? She’s the one who’s truly innocent here.”
Wiona was always the one who cared about Madison’s feelings. Madison, standing at the very back, had figured everyone had forgotten about her by now. She never expected Wiona would still keep her in mind. She gave a small, bitter smile and shook her head, mouthing, “I’m fine.” Then she stepped forward.
“Kyle, you can stop pretending,” Madison said quietly. “I know my arrival has thrown this whole family off balance. I’m the extra piece. I’ll leave. And as for Wiona, you should let her go too.”
Madison knew she and Wiona had both been hurt far too much. There was nothing left here for either of them.
Kyle’s face clouded over, the anger and betrayal twisting his features. Both his sisters had turned their backs on him, and his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles went pale. “Conrad!” he snapped, pinning all the blame on the man standing across from him. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. This is our family’s business. Why did you interfere? Whatever happens with Wiona, whatever mess we’ve got, it’s none of your business. Don’t think just because you’re powerful, you can storm in here and whisk my sister away.”
