“But I’ll never be able to erase those memories. Not ever.”
“I can’t forget the shame my mom went through. I can’t forget the night I hid in that closet, too scared to even breathe.”
“And whose fault was all of this?”
“It was Grace! It was Alona! It was Daniel! It was every single one of you in the Salisbury family.”
“After what happened, my mom grabbed me and ran. The world is a big place, but somehow, there was still nowhere for us to go.”
“She spent years hiding, changing our names, scraping by however she could. We slept under bridges, in abandoned buildings, on the street. We even lived in the mountains like wild animals.”
“But then she got sick. One day she just couldn’t get up anymore, and it only got worse.”
“She was only twenty-four when she died… depression took her, just like that.”
“If she hadn’t sent a message to Daniel before she died, making sure that useless man could find me, I probably would’ve died alone out there too. No one would’ve even known.”
“Every single day since, all I’ve thought about is revenge.”
“Every day, I’ve hated your family. I wanted all of you to pay for what you did to her.”
Isaac’s voice was raw and ugly with rage. His face twisted, dark and hateful, and the sight of it made Jean shake so badly she forgot all about her own pain.
She finally understood what real fear was.
She saw now just how deep Isaac’s hatred ran. He was even crazier than Alona or Sam. Those two just wanted to starve the truth out of her. Isaac was something else entirely. He was pure revenge, nothing else.
Jean’s lips trembled. “But… but this wasn’t our fault…”
“How was Grandma Grace supposed to know… that Deanna was pregnant?”
“If your mom had just told the truth back then… maybe things wouldn’t have gotten so bad…”
“She chose to left…”
Isaac pulled out a knife and stabbed it straight into Jean’s leg.
He didn’t even flinch at her screams. “Shut up!”
“You wanna call my mom an idiot for falling in love?”
“If she hadn’t been so naive, she wouldn’t have had me, wouldn’t have suffered so much, is that what you’re saying?”
“You think if she hadn’t read so many dumb romance stories about girls running away pregnant, she wouldn’t have thrown her life away like that?”
“I know. I know all of it.”
“But are you really innocent? Are you not to blame?”
“Jean, I’ve seen through all your little tricks.”
“You spent your whole life running after Grace, doing whatever she wanted. But guess what? This time, you’re not getting your way.”
“Grace died too quickly. Too easily.”
