“Sophie, you’re not allowed to stir things up about this anymore. Neither the situation nor Wiona is like you imagine,” Annette said, her voice steady but urgent. “Conrad knows exactly what he’s doing. Just go downstairs now.” As she spoke, Annette kept glancing at Conrad, her eyes practically begging him to ease up and not let things get even more out of hand.
Sophie’s mom and stepdad hurried over, trying to guide Sophie away. “Sophie, don’t put your aunt in such a tough spot,” her mother whispered. “Right, with all these people around, can’t this wait until later? You’re putting Conrad in an impossible position.”
Sophie tried to hold herself together, her eyes filling with tears. She could barely stand being here another second. Hadn’t she always been the one to give in? He always just assumed she would back down. That she’d let Wiona off the hook.
But then Conrad let out a soft, mocking laugh.
His face was unreadable as he spoke, his words slow and cutting. “You’re questioning Ms. Morgan’s place here, but who are you to talk? Sophie, when you use her background as a weapon, do you ever think about your own? And as for whether Ms. Morgan is good enough for me, that’s for me to decide. Everyone at Hawthorne Hall already knows the answer. Who gave you the right to judge?”
His last words rang out, low and commanding. The whole room went silent. Even the band stopped playing. There were Sullivan family elders present, people even more senior than Annette, but no one made a sound. Everyone knew who truly ran the Sullivan family. Everyone knew Conrad could shake up all of Stonehill if he wanted. He’d been on top since he was seventeen, and no one had managed to knock him down since.
No one dared challenge him. No one wanted to risk crossing him. He never cared about faces or connections. Even his own family knew not to throw his name around or act out of line. If they did, he’d destroy them, no questions asked. He’d protect the family name, but he’d never let anyone step over his boundaries. That’s why the Sullivans, the Clements, and every relative kept things low-key in Stonehill. No one dared to mess around under his watch.
Right then, everyone realized Conrad was furious. He was completely losing it over Ms. Morgan. No one dared crack a smile or whisper. Only Sophie stood there, her red eyes finally spilling over with tears.
“What… what did you just say?” Sophie’s voice shook. “Conrad, are you really comparing me to her? You know I was bullied as a kid because of my family. You know! And now you’re defending her by throwing my past in my face?”
