A bed that cost more than most people make in a year. A mattress that could pay for a new car. A vanity edged with gold. The bathroom was bigger than her old bedroom, and the walk-in closet was larger than her entire apartment used to be.

All of it should have been hers. Kellen’s. She stood at the window, envy burning in her chest as she looked down at the garden. Her eyes drifted to Wiona’s belly.

“My babies,” she whispered, “once that woman gives birth to you, her job is done.

“No one will care if she doesn’t make it out of the delivery room.

“When the four of us can finally be together, everything the Salisbury family owns will belong to me and my babies.”

A greedy hunger flickered in Kellen’s eyes. She spent the whole day just soaking in the luxury of the master suite, not willing to step outside for even a minute.

Before she knew it, night had fallen.

Jace and his father, Daniel, came home from work together. Out in the garden, Wiona sat in a camping chair under the awning, reading by the soft glow of a lamp.

Since finding out Wiona was pregnant with twins, Daniel had become much nicer to her. Seeing her outside, he couldn’t help but ask, “It’s getting chilly and the dew’s heavy tonight. Why are you reading out here?”

Wiona stood up and smiled. “The air’s really fresh tonight. I thought I’d read a little about prenatal education before bed.”

Daniel just nodded and headed for the house, but Jace lingered, frowning.

“Wiona, what are you up to now?”

She didn’t even look at him, acting like she hadn’t heard a thing. Jace just stood there, watching her pretend to focus on her book. Molly came out right then, carrying a cup of hot tea.

“Mrs. Salisbury, please have some tea.

“You should get some rest soon.

“Otherwise, all the noise in the morning will wake you up early.

“I’ll ask the gardener to trim the branches later tomorrow so it’s quiet.”

Daniel paused, realizing something was off. He walked back over.

“Wiona, are you planning to sleep out here tonight?”

Jace’s face changed completely. He lowered his voice, his anger obvious. “What kind of nonsense is this?

“Isn’t it embarrassing enough already?

“Get inside.”

Wiona put her hand on her belly and looked troubled. “Even if I don’t care about myself, I have to think of the babies.”

“So this time, I can’t do what you want.”

Jace felt a surge of frustration. “I’m just asking you to have Kellen stay in your room for a few days.

“Why are you being so selfish?

“Is the west guest room really that bad?

“And now you’re camping out in the garden like this... Wiona, are you trying to embarrass the Salisbury family?”

He grabbed her wrist, squeezing so hard it hurt. The anger in his eyes was impossible to hide, and Wiona shrank back, her own eyes full of fear.
