Kellen’s voice was thick with jealousy and doubt.

Jace stepped away, lowering his voice as he spoke. “Kellen, you never used to worry like this.”

“I’ve been married to Wiona for over a year, and I haven’t even laid a finger on her. What do you still have to be suspicious about? Do you honestly not trust me?”

Kellen sounded so hurt. “But you keep looking at her lately. You don’t know how uneasy that makes me.”

Jace hesitated, caught off guard. Was he really looking at Wiona that much? Had he even noticed?

He didn’t realize his tone had gotten a little desperate. “She’s pregnant with our child. I’m just trying to take care of both of you. That’s all it is.”

“Is it really?”

After some effort, Jace finally managed to calm Kellen. When he looked up, Wiona was nowhere to be seen.

She had wandered off behind a hedge, where she spotted a little boy, maybe seven or eight, sketching by a bed of roses. He was trying to draw butterflies dancing over the flowers, but he couldn’t seem to sit still. Before Wiona could say anything, the boy tossed his pencil aside and dashed after a kitten that suddenly scampered by.

Wiona walked up to the easel, her fingers itching to try sketching the rose bushes herself.

Not far away, Conrad was passing through and caught a glimpse of her through the hedges. He stopped in his tracks.

The director of the care home, following behind, looked puzzled. “Mr. Sullivan, is something wrong?”

Conrad broke his gaze and replied, “Nothing.”

They kept walking, taking a path that led them away from where Wiona stood, into a small grove.

The director twisted his hands nervously, glancing at the young man at his side.
