Jace ran over and caught Kellen right as she hit the ground, wrapping her up in his arms.
Kellen reached back to touch her head, then looked at her hand. It was smeared with blood. Her eyes filled with tears and she whimpered, “Jace… it hurts so much…”
Even so, she clung to his shirt and tried to explain for Wiona, her voice small and pitiful. “Don’t blame her. It’s all my fault.”
“I just wanted to explain things to Ms. Morgan, but she was really angry… Jace, this is all on me. If bleeding a little makes Ms. Morgan feel better… then it’s worth it…”
Her words barely left her lips before her body went limp and she fainted in his arms.
Jace’s face crumpled in pain and regret. He held her tight, like she might slip away. “Kellen! Kellen, don’t do this to me. Please, wake up…”
“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have yelled. I shouldn’t have ignored you. I knew you’d never do something like that, but I still didn’t trust you.”
He looked around frantically. “Somebody, help! Please, someone help her!”
As the doctors rushed Kellen away, Jace just stood there, totally lost, looking like his whole world had just shattered.
Then he snapped his head up and his eyes locked onto Wiona, who was standing quietly nearby. His stare was icy and full of venom, sharp enough to cut right through her.
He stormed toward her. Without saying a word, he raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
The smack echoed down the hallway, loud and clear. Everyone nearby froze. For a second, the hospital was dead silent except for the sound of Jace’s heavy breathing.
Wiona just lifted her hand and wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, calm as ever. She stared at him, her eyes so cold and distant, there wasn’t a hint of blame in them—just pure indifference.
That look made something twist uncomfortably in Jace’s chest, but anger still burned hotter.
“Happy now?” he spat. “Wiona, I never thought you could be this petty.”
“If anything happens to Kellen tonight, you’ll pay for it with your life.”
Wiona’s voice was even. “Fine. I’ll be waiting.”
She turned and walked away without looking back.
Jace watched her go, a strange feeling creeping into his heart, like something important was slipping further and further away from him.
From the crowd, someone whispered, “Honestly, it looked like that mistress did it on purpose…”
“Yeah, didn’t she say something about love being ‘first come, first served’? What wife could listen to that?”
“Totally, she’s the mistress, right? Provoking the wife nonstop. I even heard she almost made that poor woman lose her babies yesterday.”
