**Raindrops Kissing Silent Streets – by Aadi Sharma**
**Chapter 37**
Renee shifted her gaze slightly towards Kayla, her voice steady and composed as she spoke. “At least you possess a degree of self-awareness.” She paused, allowing her words to sink in before continuing, “So, perhaps next time, refrain from throwing yourself at people like that. It’s not just embarrassing for you; it’s uncomfortable for everyone who witnesses it. Honestly, it was so cringeworthy that I could practically feel the secondhand embarrassment radiating from across the golf course.”
It was clear that Renee was referring to Kayla’s hasty dash to fetch Jasper a bottle of water earlier in the day. The sting of her words was undeniable, cutting through the air with precision.
Kayla’s cheeks flushed a deep crimson, a mix of anger and humiliation bubbling within her. “I-I had a task to complete, okay? I was trying to forge a connection with Mr. Zeller! I wanted to foster cooperation between him and my family. You don’t understand anything!” Her voice trembled slightly, revealing the intensity of her emotions.
“I have no desire to understand,” Renee replied coolly, her tone devoid of sympathy. “And don’t forget what I instructed you to do.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, her posture exuding confidence. Kayla stood rooted in place, fists clenched tightly at her sides, grappling with the dilemma of whether to capitulate to Renee’s demands.
Inside the private room, the atmosphere was electric, filled with the vibrant chatter and laughter of a dozen or so men and women. The energy was palpable, a blend of excitement and anticipation.
“Since we have a bit of time on our hands, how about a game of Brag, Mr. Zeller? It’s a fast-paced three-card poker game that’s quite popular and a lot of fun,” Julian proposed, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
In this world, business deals were often sealed over drinks or negotiated across a card table. As long as both parties were willing to engage, opportunities always seemed to arise.
“I’m in,” Chris chimed in eagerly, his love for card games evident in his quick response.
No one voiced any objections, and soon, all eyes were fixed on Jasper, the guest of honor at this gathering. The event had been meticulously arranged in his honor, and without his approval, the card game would remain a mere suggestion.
Jasper let out a low, amused chuckle, raising an eyebrow in mock contemplation. “Well, since everyone is so enthusiastic, how could I possibly dampen the mood?”
“Fantastic! Let’s take our seats then,” Adam said with a hearty laugh, gesturing for Jasper and his entourage to join them at the table.
The group made their way over to the round table, settling in comfortably, while a few who weren’t interested in card games drifted off to other activities.
