**Raindrops Kissing Silent Streets – by Aadi Sharma**
**Chapter 40**
As the first round unfolded, the atmosphere at the table was charged with anticipation. Seven players, sensing the stakes rising, opted to fold, leaving only Adam, Jasper, and Conrad in the fray. The tension was palpable, and Adam, feeling a surge of confidence, decided to raise the stakes dramatically. When Conrad ultimately folded, a victorious grin spread across Adam’s face, and he pushed his bet up to a staggering one and a half million.
When the cards were finally revealed, Adam’s heart raced as he realized he had won with a straight flush, triumphing over Jasper’s mere pair of aces.
“Well played, Mr. Zeller,” Adam exclaimed, laughter bubbling up from within him, his face illuminated with the thrill of victory.
Renee, the dealer, slid the chips toward Adam with a knowing smile before gathering the cards to prepare for the next hand.
“That’s quite the lucky hand you’ve got there. You sure you’re not pulling a fast one on us, Ms. Whitley?” one of the players joked, his eyes glinting with mischief.
“Yeah, she must be letting him win,” another chimed in, a smirk playing on his lips.
“If she’s cheating, Mr. Zeller won’t let it slide,” came a voice from the other side of the table, filled with mock seriousness.
“Right? Maybe it’s just his lucky day,” someone else added, chuckling softly.
The men surrounding the table were either affluent or influential, so the loss of a few million was hardly a concern for them. Yet, the women nearby exchanged whispers, their eyes darting between the players, intrigued by the unfolding drama.
Renee, however, remained unfazed by the chatter. With a steady hand, she shuffled the cards and dealt the next round, her focus unwavering.
Conrad managed to secure a win in the second round, followed by Julian taking the third. Chris claimed the fourth round, and Caspian emerged victorious in the fifth.
As the rounds progressed, Jasper found himself on the losing end, having already shed over twenty million. With a cigarette dangling from his lips, he cast a sharp glance at Renee, curiosity and frustration mingling in his eyes. “Ms. Whitley, are you holding a grudge against me? How else can you explain my terrible luck with these cards?”
Renee met his gaze with a gentle smile that seemed to radiate warmth. “Mr. Zeller, you’re being quite unfair. I still have ten million riding on you,” she replied, her tone light yet sincere.
She continued to deal the cards, her movements graceful and fluid.
