James didn’t say a word the whole time.
He just stood there, tall and unshakable, holding Emmy’s hand. His rough thumb brushed gently over her soft skin, soothing her in a way only she could feel.
While everyone else argued over each other, Emmy suddenly broke into a smile.
“I have a question for Gregory and Aunt Sally,” she said, her tone light. “When my mom married my dad, did he ever give her a single cent as a dowry?”
Her words hit the room like a bomb. The entire Lincoln family went silent.
Cooper’s face turned an ugly, mottled red.
Teresa, her eyes rimmed with tears, looked at Emmy and spoke up. “Not only did your father not give me a penny for a dowry, but on our wedding day, I actually transferred five percent of Starlight Corporation’s shares to him—in my own name.”
Emmy raised her eyebrows. “Back then, Starlight Corporation was the biggest company in the city. Five percent of that would be worth, what, tens of millions now?”
She turned to James with a sweet little smile. “Looks like I’m the one shortchanging my husband.”
Then she looked back at Cooper. “Dad, maybe it’s time you make it up to my husband. How about you give him the same share from Starlight Corporation?”
“You ungrateful brat! I raised you for nothing!”
Cooper’s face twisted with rage. He grabbed the teacup beside him and threw it straight at Emmy.
Emmy’s eyes widened. She barely had time to react.
But James moved faster than anyone could see.
He stepped forward, arm outstretched. In the middle of everyone’s shocked gasps, he caught the steaming cup in midair, one-handed and steady.
A few drops of hot tea splashed onto his hand, but he didn’t even flinch.
Suddenly, the living room was dead silent.
All eyes turned to Teresa, the quiet woman standing by Emmy’s side.
Teresa was trembling, not from fear, but pure anger.
She could put up with the relatives’ snide remarks. She could even tolerate Cooper lashing out at her. But she would never let anyone lay a finger on her daughter.
“Teresa! Are you crazy?” Aunt Sally screamed, rushing to Cooper’s side and clutching his bleeding head. “What are you doing? Trying to kill my brother? If anything happens to him, you’ll regret it!”
She spun around and yelled at the younger family members. “Why are you all just standing there? Help me! Get him to the hospital!”
Instant chaos erupted in the living room.
Gregory jabbed a finger at Teresa, shouting, “No wonder Emmy turned out like this—she gets it from you! When Cooper recovers, I’ll make sure he divorces you!”
Everyone scrambled, half-panicked, to get the moaning Cooper out the door.
