Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 146

Emmy’s heart did a little flip.

He saw her drive out?

A million thoughts flashed through her mind all at once.

If she admitted she’d gone to the hospital, he would definitely get the wrong idea.

Especially since that morning, when Evelina had told her to go to the hospital right in front of him, his face had turned so dark it was almost funny.

If he found out she’d actually gone…

Emmy’s fingers hesitated over her phone. She had no choice but to fib.

[Just stopped by Dr. Pepper’s place to ask about something for work.]

No reply.

Emmy stared at the silent chat screen, then sent another message.

[So, what do you want for dinner tonight?]

Still nothing.

She frowned.

Maybe he was just busy.

After work, she drove over to the fire station and parked outside.

The golden sunset washed over everything as she leaned against her car, quietly waiting.

Suddenly, the screech of alarms cut through the air. One fire engine after another tore out of the gates, all bright red and gleaming in the fading light.

Emmy straightened up, craning her neck and scanning every determined, young face in the passing trucks.

He wasn’t there.

One truck, then another, and another. By the time the last one disappeared around the corner, she still hadn’t caught a glimpse of him.

Her heart felt strangely empty.

“Ma’am, you should probably head home,” the guard at the gate said, walking over. “James had an emergency call. He barely got back before he was out again.”

Emmy blinked. “Do you know where he went?”

The guard shook his head. “No idea. James is always busy. Next time, maybe try calling ahead before you come by.”

So she had no choice but to drive home alone.

After dinner, she checked her phone—still nothing from James.

She sent another message.

“It’s a plan! Shopping Saturday morning, and we can stop by the retirement home in the afternoon.”

“Sounds good.”

They chatted for a few more minutes before hanging up.

Before bed, Emmy opened James’s chat again.

The conversation was still stuck on her last unanswered question.

She wondered what could possibly be keeping him so busy that he didn’t even have time to check his phone.

Finally, she sent one more message.

[No matter how busy you are, remember to get some rest and sleep early, okay?]

Meanwhile, across the city, the top floor of the Nelson Corporation skyscraper was still blazing with lights.

James—sometimes Jamie—sat in a leather chair, his whole presence radiating “keep your distance.”

Stacks of paperwork crowded his desk. His long fingers gripped a pen as he signed document after document, barely pausing for breath.

Suddenly, his phone lit up on the desk.

He glanced over, and the second he saw “Wife” on the screen, his hand froze.
