Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 149

He grabbed the rope, pushed off the wall with his legs, and in a few smooth, powerful swings, dropped straight down to the ground.

Screams exploded everywhere.

“Oh my god, he just jumped down! That was insane!”

“I swear, he’s hotter than any movie hero!”

“Is he even human? That looked better than CGI!”

“I can’t—my heart can’t take this. I need him over here for mouth-to-mouth, stat!”

The shrieks were so loud they nearly blew the roof off, but Emmy barely glanced over before turning away, cool as ever, and heading back to her office.

She picked up the office phone. “Aidan, go to the pharmacy and grab a bunch of herbal drinks for heatstroke. Drop them off at the fire station next door.”

She paused, then added, “Pick up some chilled water and a watermelon too. Slice it up before you take it over.”

After hanging up, Emmy checked her chat with James. The most recent message was the reminder she’d sent before bed last night.

He should’ve been back at the station by now, so why hadn’t he texted her? Was he just busy, or… was he ignoring her?

She was still lost in thought when her phone lit up—Steve was calling.

Emmy picked up.

Steve’s voice came through, as casual as always. “I found out who bribed Quinnie. You’re not gonna believe it. The account’s from that big European business tower.”

Emmy’s eyes narrowed. She remembered Evelina’s mom worked as a director in that building.

Her voice turned cold. “Don’t tell me it’s Evelina’s mother, Claudia?”

Steve let out a low whistle. “You’re sharp, Emmy.”

“We tracked the registration to that address. Once we figured out the motive, it was obvious. But she’s clever—her actual office isn’t there, so we don’t have solid proof.”

Emmy frowned. “Besides being Evelina’s mom, what other reason would she have?”

There was a long pause.

Finally, Steve’s voice dropped. “Listen, let me finish putting the evidence together. You’ll have it by next week at the latest. Ask your mom then—this isn’t something I should say.”

Abriella watched Emmy absentmindedly flipping through clothes and finally asked, “What’s up with you? You’re totally out of it.”

Emmy couldn’t hold it in any longer and grumbled, “Your cousin’s been moody lately. I honestly have no idea what I did this time.”

Abriella laughed. “My cousin’s actually a great guy. Sure, he’s got a temper, but he’d never get mad at you for no reason.”

She leaned in, dropping her voice. “Think about it—did you do something? Did you lie to him recently?”

Emmy froze.

Suddenly, she remembered. James had asked her where she went that afternoon, and she’d lied.

After that, he hadn’t replied to a single message.

Could he have found out she went to the hospital?

Her face grew complicated.

Abriella noticed right away and poked her, half annoyed, half amused. “What did you do this time?”
