Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 157

Emmy couldn’t even look at his face without flashing back to that kiss in the stairwell. Her heart jumped, her thoughts all over the place.

She was terrified he might catch her off guard and kiss her again.

If they kept going like this, she was pretty sure things would get out of control.

So as soon as she finished her last bite, she set down her fork and bowl in a hurry.

“I still have some work to finish. I’ll just go to the study first!”

Without waiting for a response, she made a beeline for the study, shut the door, and locked it behind her.

Out in the living room, James watched her run away, his eyes darkening. Finally, he just gave a helpless little smile and went back to his own apartment.

For the next week, things were surprisingly calm between them.

Every day, James dropped off lunch from the fire station.

After work, they’d have dinner together in Emmy’s apartment.

Even the constant rain finally let up.

But whenever Emmy thought about how the sun was finally out, all she could think about was her promise to James—that she’d go running with him to work. Honestly, just thinking about it made her want to hide under the couch.

After dinner that night, she finally worked up the nerve.

“So… if it’s sunny tomorrow, I’ll run with you to work.”

She wasn’t about to be someone who broke a promise.

James’s eyes lit up with a smile.

“Alright. Then tonight, let me show you some warm-up stretches.”

Emmy groaned. “What? Tonight? Don’t we have to start tomorrow?”

But she didn’t get her way—and neither did James.

She had barely set down her fork when her phone rang. Marian’s voice came through, thick with tears.

“Miss Emmy, something’s happened! Your mom… she fell down the stairs!”

Emmy’s mind went completely blank. She grabbed her car keys and ran for the door.

But James was faster. He reached out and took the keys from her hand.

“She said she wanted to divorce Mr. Cooper tonight, went upstairs to get the marriage certificate, and a new maid followed her… I saw it with my own eyes, the maid pushed her!”

“And the security footage—someone cut out those few minutes! That maid is missing now too!”

Emmy’s eyes were blazing as she glared at Cooper.

“You’re lying! My mom didn’t just fall—someone pushed her!”

Cooper’s eyes widened for a split second, then he snapped, “That’s ridiculous! We were all there. Who saw anyone push her? And who told you this nonsense?”

He turned on the butler behind him, barking, “Brooks, go! Find out who’s been spreading lies to Miss Emmy and lock them up. I want to know who dares accuse us!”

Brooks actually lowered his head and turned to leave.

“Peter!” Emmy called out in disbelief. “What are you doing? Are you really going to cover for whoever did this?”

Brooks stopped and glanced back, his expression distant and formal.

“Miss Emmy, I was in the living room the whole time. Mr. Cooper and Ms. White never left the couch. Your mother… she really did fall on her own.”

“I believe Mr. Cooper would never hurt Mrs. Cooper. They’ve argued a lot lately, and he’s been so upset he didn’t come home for days. But every night, he brought her flowers, trying to make things right. Miss Emmy, you’re blaming the wrong person.”
