Emmy really wanted to cover her ears.
Men always changed after their first taste of pleasure—there was just no escaping that rule. Dean had been the same way in her last life. After they got married, he’d lost all sense of restraint for the longest time. Back then, she’d actually believed she was the only thing on his mind.
But even that didn’t come close to how wild things had gotten with James that night.
She couldn’t even remember if she’d passed out from the pain or—well, from something a lot more enjoyable.
That dizzy, floating feeling had been too much. She hated thinking about it, but she also couldn’t help herself. How had she let herself get so completely swept away by this man? She bit her lip, kept quiet, and pretended to be fast asleep.
Of course, James knew she was faking. His eyes darkened, but he let it go.
He got up, switched off the light, and came back to pull her into his arms.
But he couldn’t sleep at all.
Holding his gorgeous wife so close but not being able to have her was pure torture. His whole body radiated heat, and Emmy ended up tossing and turning all night, feeling just as restless.
The next morning, sunlight slipped through the curtains and woke Emmy up.
James was already gone, but she could still feel the heat he’d left behind.
She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and headed to the bathroom. When she came back, the sight that greeted her made her snap awake in an instant.
James had his back to her, yanking the sheets off the bed in total silence.
He was quick, maybe a little too rough, his jaw tight.
Emmy’s eyes landed on the dark stain on the sheet. She stared, completely stunned.
She just couldn’t hold it in and pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh.
James must have felt her eyes on him because his back went rigid. He balled up the sheets even faster, not looking at her as he marched over and stuffed them into the washer-dryer.
His face was all serious, but the tips of his ears were bright red.
“I’ll make you breakfast,” he said in a low, scratchy voice, like he was dying for an excuse to get out of there.
Emmy leaned against the doorframe, grinning at him. “No need. There’s a new dim sum place downstairs. Want to go together?”
He answered with a deep “Sure,” still not looking at her as he headed into the bathroom, closing the door a little harder than usual.
Emmy wandered into the living room and finally let herself laugh out loud.
This guy could be surprisingly innocent sometimes.

Monday. Starlight Corporation’s boardroom.
He forced a smile. “I just meant, you should greet the board members first. It’s not proper to just sit down like that. I don’t mind, but you should say hello to your uncles.”
Emmy played along, standing up and greeting each director, her manners flawless.
Once she sat down again, Cooper immediately leaned closer, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper.
“Emmy, I heard… Nelson Corporation isn’t planning to buy Starlight anymore?”
Now she understood why he was acting so friendly.
She turned and said, “Maybe Nelson just isn’t interested in buying a company that’s been going downhill for more than a decade.”
Cooper’s face turned pitch-black.
Everyone knew Starlight’s decline had started under his leadership.
One of the directors heard and leaned in, “Emmy, is it true? Nelson Corporation isn’t buying us anymore?”
Emmy stayed calm. “I’ll make an official announcement once the meeting starts.”
Cooper looked like he wanted to argue, but Emmy was done.
“Danny, pass out the files.”
