Evelina paused, then let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
“So you finally noticed? I thought those eyes of yours could only see Dean. Nothing else ever mattered, right?”
She smirked, lifting her chin. “Well, hate to break it to you, but it’s mine now. Dean gave it to me himself. He handed it over—just for me.”
Emmy’s hands curled into fists at her sides.
She’d suspected this, but hearing it out loud still felt like a punch to the gut.
She always thought it was only after Dean’s mom had her accident that he changed.
But now she realized the truth—Dean and Evelina had been sneaking around behind her back for a long time.
Rage and betrayal swept over her, burning away her composure.
With a loud smack, Emmy slapped Evelina hard across the face.
“Is stolen stuff really something you’re proud of? Evelina, you and your mom—stealing is in your blood.”
Evelina covered her flaming cheek with her good hand, but her eyes sparkled with a twisted kind of satisfaction.
“I don’t need your things to win awards. I just wanted you to see that Dean will do anything for me. He’ll betray anyone—especially you.”
“All I did was whine about not having any inspiration, and he handed me all your hard drives.”
“He’s been obsessed with me for ages, Emmy. The only one fooling themselves here is you.”
“You—”
Emmy was shaking with fury, her hand already raised for another slap.
But right before she could hit again, Evelina’s eyes darted over Emmy’s shoulder, looking at something behind her.
The next second, Evelina suddenly toppled over, hitting the floor with a dramatic thud.
She tilted her tear-streaked face up, voice trembling with perfect misery.
“Emmy, I know you hate me. I deserve everything—your anger, your slap…”
She almost had to admire Evelina’s acting skills—and Dean’s total cluelessness.
But then she remembered all those sleepless nights she’d spent, pouring her heart into her work, only for Dean to just hand it over like it was nothing. Her eyes burned with tears she refused to let fall.
“Dean, I honestly hate myself for ever loving you.”
“If I could do it over, I’d never choose you. I’d never give either of you the chance to team up and screw me over.”
Dean’s face twisted with confusion and panic. “What are you talking about? When did we ever betray you?”
Before Emmy could answer, Evelina let out a sharp cry and collapsed in Dean’s arms, pretending to faint.
Dean’s attention snapped to her, all other concerns forgotten. He scooped Evelina up, cradling her protectively. But before leaving, he shot Emmy a final, icy warning.
“If her hand doesn’t heal, you’re going to break your own to make it up to her.”
Emmy leaned back against the cold wall, clenching her fists so tightly her nails dug into her skin.
She took several shaky breaths, trying to get her emotions under control, then turned and walked back into the hospital room.
