Aunt Sally was pinned to the ground by two huge security guards, shaking so hard she almost peed herself.
Rose snapped out of it quicker than her mom. She screeched, “I’m a patient! I’m here for treatment! Why are you grabbing us? I’m reporting you!”
The guards looked at each other, then checked the list. A voice came through the radio, “Yeah, there’s a twenty-six-year-old patient named Rose. Checked in with her mother.”
This was a private hospital with a members-only system—patients had to put down at least fifty grand before even getting an appointment, and it wasn’t refundable. Only the rich or powerful ever set foot in here. Regular people didn’t stand a chance.
The guards had to let them go.
The second they were released, Rose and Aunt Sally bolted for the exit. Emmy felt her anger spike even higher. With James’s life hanging by a thread and her nerves already shot, dealing with these two was almost too much.
She didn’t even think, just took off after them.
She chased them out of the hospital doors, pulling out her phone to call for help—when two strange men jumped out from behind a corner, grabbing her arms and dragging her toward the wall.
Rose and Aunt Sally stopped running, leaning against the wall, gasping for air and shooting Emmy looks full of pure hatred.
Aunt Sally finally caught her breath and spat at Emmy’s feet. “Little bitch! Didn’t think you’d chase us this far! Nearly gave me a heart attack!”
She raised her hand, aiming to slap Emmy. But Emmy’s eyes went icy. Before Aunt Sally’s hand could land, Emmy kicked her hard in the stomach.
Aunt Sally screamed and stumbled back, crashing to the ground.
Emmy fought with everything she had. “Let go! If you touch me again, I swear you’ll be in prison for the rest of your lives!”
The guy behind her just tightened his hold, forcing her down to her knees.
She struggled desperately, and from the corner of her eye, saw a familiar Bentley pulling up at the hospital entrance. Through the tinted window, she was sure she saw that strong, familiar face.
A rush of adrenaline hit her. Emmy broke free, shoved the hand away from her mouth, and screamed with everything she had, “James, help me!”
She was yanked back instantly, her mouth covered even tighter.
Behind her, one of the men swore. “Didn’t think a spoiled princess would be this strong!”
Rose just watched Emmy’s struggle, her smile cold and cruel.
“James? You really think your husband’s coming to save you? Haven’t you heard? He died last night in the rescue—mercenaries shot him dead.”
