Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 216

The first thing Emmy noticed was the thick gauze wrapped around his right side. One look and she knew it wasn’t a minor injury.

But he pressed her hand, his voice gentle and reassuring.

“It’s nothing serious. Just give it a couple of days and I’ll be alright.”

“Was it a gunshot?” Emmy asked, barely able to keep her voice steady.

She’d heard the rumors about Pine Peak—how it had been chaos all night, with fires and gunshots echoing through the darkness.

He wrapped his big hand around hers, his palm warm and steady, covering both her fingers and the back of her hand.

“The bullet just grazed me. It’s a surface wound, really. Nothing major.”

James’s gaze suddenly sharpened, his dark eyes locked on her.

“But what about you? What just happened out there?”

So Emmy told him everything that went down in the parking lot. By the time she finished, she was still fuming.

“I can’t believe those people! After all the years Starlight Corporation took care of them, I fire a few deadbeats by the book, and they try to get back at me? They even tried to throw acid on my face! Unbelievable.”

“Luckily, you showed up when you did.”

James’s face darkened as he listened. His jaw was clenched tight, and the energy around him felt almost dangerous.

“They tried to kidnap you in broad daylight. They’ve been arrested—the police are outside. In a bit, you’ll need to make a statement.”

“And your Porsche? Forget about it. Let them pay you for the loss. As soon as you’re feeling better, I’ll take you to pick out a new car.”

A rush of warmth flooded Emmy’s chest.

She’d thought James was just being polite when he said he’d get her a new car. It’s not like cars were cheap, and he was just a regular guy with an everyday job.

But the fact that he meant it—that meant everything to her.

She nodded softly. “Okay.”

They didn’t just wipe out the syndicate’s core members in the city—they tracked them to their hideout, seized an enormous stash of drugs, and shut the whole operation down.

For all of that, James was awarded a first-class merit, and every one of his team got their own honors.

But he didn’t say any of this to Emmy.

He just picked a few safe details, skipping over the real danger, and told her about a group of criminals finally being brought to justice.

Even so, Emmy was on the edge of her seat, her heart pounding.

She looked at him, a mix of admiration, fear, and worry shining in her eyes.

“That medal… you really had to fight for it,” she said, her voice a little rough. “You have to promise me you’ll rest this time. No more pushing yourself.”

Suddenly, she remembered something. “Hey, my mom’s old hospital room just opened up. Why don’t you move in there?”

That way, she could keep an eye on him, every single day.
