She hopped out of the car and closed the door behind her, giving a polite nod.
“Yes, that’s me. Are you Mrs. Nelson’s grandson?”
The man nodded and wheeled himself a little closer.
“We’re always so busy with work that we barely get a chance to visit. But every time we do, Grandma tells us all about you. Thank you for keeping her company these past couple of years. It really means a lot.”
He paused, then offered, “Since we ran into each other, why don’t you join us for dinner tonight? On behalf of my grandmother, I’d like to say thank you properly.”
Emmy was about to turn him down with a smile. She never expected anything in return for volunteering.
But before she could say anything, the man was already speaking to his assistant.
“Call the Pearl Club and let them know I’m hosting a special guest tonight. Reserve the best table.”
Pearl Club?
Emmy’s eyes widened just a bit.
That was the most exclusive private club in the city. You couldn’t even get in without a super-elite membership. Dinner there started at seven figures. Only the ultra-wealthy or the most powerful people in the city even set foot inside.
She quickly protested, “Sir, you really don’t have to go to so much trouble! I’m just happy to spend time with your grandmother. It’s nothing.”
His voice was gentle but there was something about it that brooked no argument.
“The table’s already reserved. Ms. Lincoln, if you don’t come, the food will just go to waste.”
“Seven tonight, Pearl Club. Just give them my name—Tyler.”
Before she could reply, his assistant was already pushing him toward the garden.
Tyler?
Emmy stood there, stunned, her heart pounding like thunder in her chest.
Was this Tyler Nelson? The legendary president of Nelson Corporation? The oldest Nelson brother?
Which meant that sweet, mysterious old lady was actually Mrs. Nelson?
Oh my god.
She sucked in a sharp breath, suddenly feeling like the world was way too small.
At exactly seven, Emmy arrived at the Pearl Club with her arm tucked through James’s.
It was a formal invitation, after all, and things were different now—she was married. Bringing her husband made everything feel more proper, especially if they were meeting someone like Tyler Nelson.
The Pearl Club lobby glowed with soft, golden light. The place was pure luxury, but it wasn’t showy—just the kind of quiet elegance that screamed old money and influence.
The second they walked in, the private elevator chimed and slid open.
Tyler came out, still looking gentle and harmless. But the group of executives behind him—each in sharp suits—were practically bowing and scraping as they followed his lead.
Tyler caught sight of Emmy and his smile warmed.
He said kindly, “Ms. Lincoln, would you mind heading upstairs to the private room? I’ll join you in a moment.”
Emmy nodded and started to lead James away.
But when she tugged him forward, he wouldn’t budge.
She turned and saw that James’s face had gone stone-cold, his dark eyes locked on Tyler in the wheelchair.
Emmy’s heart skipped. She squeezed his hand, leaning in to whisper, “James, what’s wrong?”
