Cooper felt like Emmy had just knocked the wind out of him. The calm, polished act he always wore completely shattered.
“Emmy!” he yelled, his voice echoing in the office. “Evelina is your half-sister, whether you like it or not!”
“If your mom or I were ever gone, she’d be the only family you have left. Can’t you put aside your grudges, just this once, and help your sister?”
Emmy stared at him, hardly able to believe what she was hearing.
“Sister?” She let out a cold laugh. “You cheated on my mom right after marrying her, and now you want to talk to me about family?”
Her eyes were icy, the kind of cold that went straight to your bones.
“Without that extra five percent of shares, I’m not getting involved.”
“You’re being greedy!” Cooper snapped. “The most I’ll give is two percent. With what Mr. Carter’s offering, you’d be Starlight Corporation’s real boss. You’d be able to control every big move.”
“Oh?” Emmy arched a brow, cool as ever. “Then why don’t you let your favorite little love child figure her own way out of Shadow Core?”
She honestly couldn’t care less. He wanted to keep his shares and still have her rescue his illegitimate daughter? Life didn’t work that way.
Emmy didn’t even bother looking at the two men again. She lowered her gaze, adjusted the last few lines of the divorce agreement, then snapped a photo and sent it to her assistant, Danny.
She followed up with a quick voice message: “Draft two new copies and bring them to Starlight Corporation for Mr. Lincoln to sign.”
With that done, she picked up Juan’s share transfer agreement, gave it a quick once-over, and signed her name at the bottom.
She pushed both documents into the middle of the table and finally looked up at the two men, both of them furious.
“If we’re done here, Mr. Carter, Mr. Lincoln, you know your way out.”
“Emmy!” Juan was frantic. Seeing Emmy so calm only made him more desperate. “If Evelina doesn’t get out of Shadow Core safe, I won’t go through with the share notarization!”
Emmy just smiled.
“It’s not that I don’t want to help. Mr. Lincoln just isn’t offering enough.”
She nodded toward the door, sounding lazy and distant.
“Maybe you two should talk it out privately. I have a call to make.”
“Security, please show them out.”
Ever since Abriella became Steve’s assistant, she’d been drowning in case files and endless work. Just having a real conversation had become a rare luxury.
But right now, Emmy was genuinely happy, happy enough to want to toast with someone.
The people she really trusted, the ones who cared about her small wins, she could count on one hand.
Her finger slid down her contact list and stopped, almost on its own, at a certain name.
Before she realized what she was doing, the call went through.
“Hey, babe.”
He answered right away, his voice deep and smooth, sending a warm jolt through her.
The way he said “babe” was so easy, so familiar, Emmy’s cheeks instantly turned pink.
She cleared her throat, her voice unconsciously gentler.
“Are you… busy right now?”
