Emmy pressed her lips together.
So Dean finally made his move.
He launched his rushed copycat game, Letter from Heaven, just two days before Letter from the Other Side was supposed to go live. It was a glitchy knockoff with none of the VRAI system’s magic, and the player experience was a total disaster. But with non-stop ads and a bargain price, Dean somehow stole almost half the market.
Worse, his stunt had completely muddied the waters. The hype around Letter from the Other Side took a nosedive, and the game’s reputation was suddenly on shaky ground.
Emmy had no choice but to dust off her old account—the one with millions of gaming fans—and post an in-depth review comparing the two games. Only then did she manage to keep a core group of players from jumping ship.
She still remembered the favor she owed Mr. Nelson.
That was why she couldn’t let even a single flaw slip through—nothing that could ever come back to haunt them in court.
She lifted her head, eyes sharp and steady.
James, who’d been silent this whole time, finally spoke up. “How sure are you?”
Emmy met his gaze without hesitation.
“If Mr. Nelson’s team is willing to work with me, I’m ninety percent confident.”
“Okay.”
James didn’t hesitate. He stood up in one smooth motion, completely ignoring Isabel’s report and taking only Emmy’s with him as he headed for the door.
“Come with me.”
Emmy spun around and hurried after him.
Isabel was left standing there, stunned, eyes wide in disbelief.
She never would’ve guessed that Mr. Nelson—usually so cold, silent, and impossible to please—could be this easygoing.
But then again, Emmy was a programmer. Maybe there really was something special in her report.
Trying to push down her unease, Isabel grabbed her own report and rushed after them.
James walked fast, his strides long, and Emmy had to half-jog to keep up. He noticed and, without saying a word, slowed down a little.
Soon, they reached the game development department.
It was a huge open-plan space, the air buzzing with the sound of keyboards and the smell of coffee and energy drinks. The room was packed with men—most of them recognizable names in the tech world.
James ignored all the noise. He turned to Emmy, his deep voice unexpectedly close.
“Introduce yourself.”
Emmy took a deep breath.
With so many industry big shots staring at her, it’d be a lie to say she wasn’t nervous.
She felt like a fawn who’d wandered into a pack of wolves.
But she wasn’t about to back down.
She stepped forward, lifted her chin, and met their eyes with steady confidence.
“Hi, everyone. I’m Emmy, director at Forward Technology.”
“Just like all of you, I’m a programmer—I focus on system architecture and algorithm optimization. This report is just my two cents. I’m looking forward to hearing what you all think.”
Nico, who’d been focusing on the report, suddenly looked up at the sound of her name.
He stared at her for a couple of seconds, recognition dawning on his face. Then he broke into a grin.
