Poor Nico looked like a kid who’d just been called out by the teacher, practically trying to hide inside his monitor. He couldn’t even bring himself to look her way, let alone ask for help.
“What do you need?” James’s deep voice sounded right above her.
Emmy looked up, meeting his dark, unreadable eyes. She answered honestly, “The proposal’s ready. I’d like the team to take a look at it first.”
Without missing a beat, James turned to the tech director. “Add her to the group.”
The tech director’s eyes went wide. For a moment, he looked like he’d just witnessed a miracle.
This was Nelson Corporation’s most elite IT team—Mr. Nelson’s handpicked people. Everyone in that group had signed the strictest NDAs.
And now, just like that, they were letting in a girl who’d only been here for an hour?
How much did Mr. Nelson really trust her?
Shocked or not, the director didn’t dare hesitate. He whipped out his phone and hurried over.
“Ms. Lincoln, could you scan my QR code?”
Emmy felt a little overwhelmed.
She knew exactly how important that group was. Being invited in by Mr. Nelson himself—it was a level of trust that made her chest flutter with something she couldn’t quite name.
A minute later, her friend request was accepted, and she was added to the chat named “Fantasy—Letter from the Other Side Task Force.”
She sent her proposal file right away.
Ding. Ding. Ding.
Almost everyone in the group downloaded it instantly.
The office fell quiet again, the only sounds the clicks of mouse buttons and the occasional sharp gasp.
A few minutes later, someone finally broke the silence.
“This idea…”
“It’s brilliant!”
The programmers started whispering, their voices getting louder as they formed a loose circle around her.
A middle-aged man with a receding hairline stepped forward, his eyes full of curiosity and admiration.
“Ms. Lincoln, can I ask—how did you come up with the dual-buffer solution?”
Emmy bowed her head slightly. “You’re too kind. Honestly, it’s your team that’s worked miracles—building Letter from the Other Side’s neural link system in just two years is incredible. I’m just trying to learn from the best.”
Her words struck the perfect balance—respectful and eager to learn.
Whatever awkwardness her sudden arrival had caused seemed to vanish, replaced by a new sense of camaraderie.
By the time Emmy left Fantasy Technology, it was past eleven.
She slumped into the backseat of her car, letting out a long breath.
She opened her messages, ready to leave the group full of tech geniuses.
But her finger hovered over the “Leave Group” button. She hesitated.
What if they needed her again? Maybe she could still help.
Thinking that, she backed out of the group settings and returned to the main messages screen.
The moment she did, a pinned chat popped up.
James: [It’s lunchtime. Don’t forget to eat.]
