The Lincoln family scandal had the whole upper crust buzzing, everyone eager to see Cooper make a fool of himself. People loved to gossip about his affair, but not one of them had ever laid eyes on the so-called mistress.
Turns out, it was her.
One look and you just knew—she was trouble. Every move calculated, every smile with a hidden edge.
Back when Mr. Drennon died, she’d been in on it. Now, these old men couldn’t help but worry they’d be her next victims.
Suddenly, three soft clicks cut through the tense silence.
Emmy placed three USB drives on the lazy Susan and spun it, letting them slide right in front of the men.
“I’m not sure exactly what Cooper and that woman are after,” she said, calm and steady, “but I know their endgame is Starlight Corporation’s secrets.”
She slid the first drive toward Grandpa Buckley. “Yours has Starlight’s source code and core algorithms.”
Next, she nudged one to Grandpa Carter. “This one is all the company’s financial data.”
Then to Mr. Hart, she said, “And yours holds Starlight’s business strategy.”
The three of them stared, stunned. Emmy leaned in, voice dropping lower. “Hide these. Each of you, separately. If something goes wrong, give these to him.”
She took a moment to explain more details, making sure nothing was left to chance.
The old men, shaken out of their misery, couldn’t help but see Emmy differently now. Gone was the sweet, wide-eyed girl who used to follow them around, calling out “Grandpa” and “Uncle.” Somewhere along the way, she’d grown up.
Now she was calm, unshakeable—the kind of person who could hold up the sky for Starlight Corporation when everything else was falling apart. For the first time, they realized she wasn’t just protecting the company—she was protecting them too.
Nobody expected Emmy to show up at the board meeting, marriage certificate in hand. He’d been so shocked he didn’t know what to say.
Later, when Cooper refused to hand over the shares, Grandpa Carter put on a brave face for Emmy, but deep down, he was relieved. Handing so much of Starlight to a recent graduate with no experience sounded like disaster.
But then, one thing after another happened, and every time, Emmy rose to the challenge. With each new crisis, he realized he barely knew her at all.
Now, watching her coolly hand over the USB drives and spell out her backup plans, he finally understood: the company was in the safest hands possible.
This girl he’d watched grow up could see further ahead than all of them put together.
At last, they could finally let themselves relax.
