Emmy was still half-asleep when she felt a warm, damp tickle against her ear. She shrank her neck like a sleepy kitten, letting out a soft, grumbly sound.
“I’m so tired…”
She rolled over, stretched out her arm, and wrapped it around his waist, nuzzling her cheek into his abs.
“Let’s talk after I wake up, okay?”
Her words were thick with sleep, barely understandable, but so full of trust and dependence.
James went stiff. The heat burning inside him just got worse thanks to her innocent move. He looked down at the woman in his arms, sleeping without a care in the world. His eyes darkened, then he let out a helpless sigh.
He leaned down and pressed a gentle but burning kiss to her forehead.
Forget it. He could deal with her later.
James slipped out of bed and headed for the bathroom. Soon, the sound of water echoed from inside. Cold water pounded against his tense muscles, steam filling the air, but it did nothing to put out the fire raging inside him.
The next morning.
When Emmy woke up, she heard the quiet rustle of clothes. She blinked, still groggy, and turned her head. James stood by the bed, already dressed and fastening the metal clasp on his work pants.
For a second, Emmy was confused. This man was always so hungry for her, never missing a chance to pull her close. Last night, he’d practically begged her to help him out this morning—yet here he was, just letting her be?
Almost like he could sense her thoughts, James finished buckling his pants and spun around. Their eyes met. Seeing her big, round eyes, James’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He didn’t say a word, just leaned over and pressed her down.
Emmy instinctively covered her mouth. “I haven’t brushed my teeth…”
James caught her wrist and pulled her hand away. “I don’t care.”
His lips crashed onto hers, hungry and rough, with that possessive morning energy only men seemed to have. In just a few seconds, his breathing turned heavy.
He pulled back a little, looking at the tears starting to gather in her eyes, his voice so low and scratchy it barely sounded like him.
“Wait for me. Tonight, you’re not getting away.”
He started to get up, but couldn’t help himself. His hand slipped under the covers to caress her warm, soft skin before reluctantly letting go. He pressed another hard kiss to her lips.
“I’m heading to work. Ollie’s in the living room.”
He looked up at her, his cheeks rosy, showing off his kid’s smartwatch.
“Emmy, my mom said she’s coming to pick me up this afternoon!”
Emmy froze for a second. She’d never really liked kids, but Ollie was so sweet and well-behaved that she’d started to change her mind these past few days.
Hearing he was leaving, she actually felt a bit sad.
“How about after breakfast I take you to the mall and you can pick any toy you want? How does that sound?”
Ollie’s big eyes sparkled. He asked seriously, “Will that cost a lot?”
“If it’s a lot, I don’t need anything. You should save it for your baby sister.”
Emmy couldn’t help but laugh, ruffling his soft hair.
“Since when do you worry about my money? Don’t worry, your baby sister won’t go without.”
She just took it as the silly words of a kid and didn’t think any more of it.
