Hacking into her own account was a walk in the park for Emmy.
She had it done in less than three minutes.
With a quick, decisive hit on the Enter key, a green progress bar flashed on the computer screen, showing the transfer had started.
“All set,” she said, voice steady.
Behind her, the tech guy let out a huge sigh of relief. He spun around and blurted out a string of excited words to the man lounging in the wicker chair.
Viper just snorted, yanking his knife off the table and sliding it back into the sheath strapped to his thigh.
But then everyone noticed something was wrong.
That green progress bar was crawling along, barely moving.
The tech guy’s face tightened. He rushed forward to mess with the computer, but Emmy forced herself to stand her ground and shouted, “Don’t touch it!”
She met their deadly stares, her heart slamming in her chest.
“I have to move the money out slowly, or I’ll trip the national firewall,” she said. “There’s over two hundred million in that account. If you want it all, it’s going to take at least twenty-four hours.”
That was the only time she could buy for herself.
She was gambling that as long as the money wasn’t fully in their hands, they wouldn’t dare kill her.
“You’re screwing with us, aren’t you?” the tech guy snapped, teeth clenched. “After all that, this is what I get?”
Emmy balled her hands into fists, pushing herself to stay calm. “You tried it yourself earlier. You know how hard it is. Don’t believe me? I’ll cancel it right now and you can try again.”
She slid her finger toward the cancel button.
Bang.
A gunshot exploded, the hot wind of it slicing past her ear.
Emmy shrieked and dropped to the floor, arms thrown over her head. Her ears rang.
A harsh, accented voice cut through the air, dripping with threat. “Stop wasting my time!”
“Tell me—will the money make it through or not?”
Emmy’s blood ran ice cold.
But suddenly Viper stepped in front of her, speaking fast and sharp.
The man’s face twisted with rage, but Emmy saw a flicker of hesitation. Still grinding his teeth, he barked out a few more orders to the two men.
They dragged Emmy away.
Viper followed, her voice cool and flat. “Emmy, someone sold you to Pearl. He runs this place.”
“In a bit, they’ll clean you up and send you to his bed. If you play along, maybe you’ll live a little longer.”
“But when he gets bored of you…” She nodded toward the numb, hollow-eyed women outside. “You’ll end up like them—just another toy for every man here.”
The men’s grip was iron-strong, Emmy’s feet barely touching the ground as they dragged her along.
The reek of sweat and rot crashed over her in waves, making her dizzy.
The muddy ground was scattered with women lying every which way.
