A sharp scoff slipped from Dean’s lips.
Pearl’s hand froze mid-motion, his thick face twitching with anger at the insult.
Dean didn’t bother to hide his smirk as he looked up, lazy and cool. “Really? You’re getting all worked up over a girl like this?”
Pearl’s face darkened. In front of this big-money guest, being caught messing around with a woman like Emmy felt humiliating, like he’d just made a joke of himself.
He yanked his hand back, grabbed his glass, and took a long, hard drink.
Emmy felt her nerves loosen just a little.
She hated Dean. Hated him with every nerve in her body. But here, in this godforsaken place where no one would help her, survival meant grabbing any lifeline she could. Right now, that lifeline was Dean.
She shot him a quick look, then backed away, clutching the bottle close.
Dean kept drinking, one glass after another. It wasn’t long before his eyes started to glaze over, his body swaying.
Suddenly, he reached out and pulled Emmy into his arms, draping his arm over her shoulders.
Emmy’s whole body went tense. She gripped the bottle tight and glanced at Pearl—the man looked ready to kill—but she didn’t dare push Dean away.
“These women you’ve got…” Dean slurred, sounding properly drunk as he turned to Pearl. “…they’re nothing special. But I guess she’ll do for tonight.”
He let out a burp and flashed a crooked grin. “Later, I’ll send you some real beauties. You’ll finally know what a real woman looks like.”
With that, he leaned heavily on Emmy and staggered to his feet.
“Come on, sweetheart. Show me to bed.”
Emmy braced herself, biting back the humiliation and disgust, and helped him up.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Pearl’s face get even darker.
Pearl slammed his glass down with a bang. “Mr. Sparrow! I picked her first!”
Dean didn’t even blink, just grinned, half out of it. He grabbed Emmy’s hand, brought it to his lips, and kissed her knuckles—slow, mocking, like she was nothing but a toy.
“Treat me right tonight and I’ll add two percent to your boss’s share. Sound good?”
With Pearl’s glare burning into her, Emmy helped Dean stagger down the hall and into a guest room that, thankfully, was actually clean.
As soon as the door closed, she tried to shove him off.
Dean gripped her tight, dragging her toward the bed, then pushed her down onto it. He leaned over her, already fumbling with his belt.
Emmy glared up at him, about to yell, but he leaned in close, lips brushing her ear.
“There’s someone listening outside.”
“Act. You know how.”
She kept her eyes narrowed, still on guard. “You trying to make this real, or is this just an act?”
Dean frowned, whispering, “With how you smell, I couldn’t touch you if you paid me.”
“Now hurry up—make some noise.”
