“The American soldiers aren’t going to let you walk away from this,” Emmy spat, her voice raw with anger.
Pearl just laughed harder, grabbing her chin and leaning in so close she could smell the booze on his breath. “How are you just as naive as your boyfriend? If they barge in here, that’s exactly what I want. This whole place is a trap—nobody’s getting out alive, not even them.”
Emmy glared at him, her jaw clenched. “You’ll get what’s coming to you!”
Pearl grinned, wild-eyed. “What does that even mean? Retribution? Please. They could tear this place apart and never find me. You two know too much, and now neither of you are leaving.”
He glanced over his shoulder at Dean, who was pinned to the ground by two of Pearl’s goons, and sneered, “That pretty face of his? You know what, let them have some fun with him.”
The two thugs holding Dean burst into disgusting laughter. One of them hurried around behind Dean, hands already fumbling at his belt.
Just then, one of Pearl’s men stumbled into the doorway, clutching his bleeding arm and babbling something urgent in the local dialect.
Pearl’s expression changed in a heartbeat. He spat on the floor, turned to leave, then jabbed a finger at the thug about to attack Dean. “Watch them. Don’t let them out of your sight.”
He stormed out, his other men following close behind.
Suddenly, the bamboo hut felt emptier, just Emmy, Dean, and the leering thug left behind.
Emmy was shoved aside, landing hard on the floor. The thug barely glanced at her, already convinced she wasn’t a threat. He was all focused on Dean, both hands on Dean’s pants, mumbling crude threats.
He never saw Emmy slowly getting back up.
Her eyes darted to a filthy metal bedpan in the corner.
Without thinking, she lunged for it, grabbed it with both hands, and swung it as hard as she could at the back of the man’s head.
There was a sickening thud.
The bedpan bent around his skull. He staggered, dazed, and his grip on Dean slipped.
Dean’s eyes went cold. He twisted free, grabbed the knife tucked into the thug’s waistband, and jammed it straight into his stomach.
Bang. Bang, bang.
Emmy ducked instinctively, covering her head. Dean pulled her behind him, kept his finger on the trigger, and yanked the door open.
They both froze.
Two cartel thugs lay sprawled in the doorway, blood pooling beneath them. Each had a clean bullet hole in the forehead—sniper shots.
Dean reacted instantly, scooping up one of the dead men’s pistols and shoving it into Emmy’s hand.
She took it, but kept the knife tucked close to her chest.
Outside, in the dark, shadowy figures darted between huts. Two more cartel guards didn’t even get a chance to scream—a gloved hand clamped over their mouths, a combat knife flashed, and both dropped without a sound.
Dean’s earpiece crackled. Will’s voice came through, urgent and breathless. “Dragon, we’ve found her! Six o’clock, biggest bamboo hut by the river!”
