He shouted after that tall figure, fighting like hell to break out of the soldier’s iron grip. He was half-mad to get to her, but the special forces blocked him at every turn.
One of the soldiers fixed him with a cold stare from behind his goggles. His voice was clipped and final, like there wasn’t even a point in explaining.
“Mr. Sparrow, please cooperate. Evacuate with the other hostages now.”
Dean could only watch as the man carried the woman he loved further and further away. It felt like someone had ripped his heart clean out of his chest.
“Emmy’s the one I saved! I should be the one taking her, not him!”
“What gives you the right to stop me? Give her back!”
He screamed himself hoarse, eyes wild and red, half out of his mind with grief.
Finally, another soldier snapped, unable to listen any longer. “Mr. Sparrow, if it weren’t for us, you’d be dead right now.”
Dean froze.
He stared at the spot where they’d disappeared, his eyes blazing with pain and frustration. Why?
He was the one who’d risked everything, who’d stormed straight into hell to bring her out.
He should be the one carrying her out of this nightmare.
So why could she act so calm in front of him, but fall apart in another man’s arms?
Was there really not a single place left for him in her heart?
That thought chewed him up inside, so sharp he could barely stand.
.
Meanwhile—
Emmy was wrapped tightly in James’s arms, breathing in the steady, comforting scent of him. Finally, all her tension unraveled. Exhaustion hit her like a wave. She couldn’t fight it anymore—her head dropped onto his chest, and she completely passed out.
James hesitated.
Just then, Will rushed over, breathless. “Commander! Some of the traffickers escaped through the fake village. Command’s asking for backup!”
James looked down at Emmy, her vulnerability clear as day.
He gently peeled her fingers off his shirt, one by one.
He leaned in close, his voice deep and steady in her ear.
“I’ll be back.”
Then, without hesitation, he handed her over to a female soldier, his tone snapping back to that of a commander.
“Take her out of here!”
He turned and headed straight back into the darkness of the jungle, his team right behind him.
