Ivy glanced at the clock and stood up in a hurry.
“Ma’am, it’s getting late. Your husband should be home soon, so I’ll head back to my room. I don’t want to get in the way.”
It was second nature to her, the kind of habit that comes from years of working as a housekeeper.
But Emmy reached out and gently tugged at Ivy’s sleeve.
“Don’t go, Ivy. Stay with me, okay?”
She motioned toward the sofa. “You can sit here, watch your dramas if you want.”
Emmy knew all too well that Ivy didn’t have many hobbies, but she loved binging those short web dramas on her phone—the kind where each episode was only a few minutes long.
Ivy hesitated, looking a little shy, but the trust in Emmy’s eyes made her give in.
Even so, Ivy knew Emmy too well not to notice that something wasn’t right.
“Ma’am, are you really okay? Did something happen while you were away?”
Emmy just smiled and shook her head, not saying a word.
Since Emmy clearly didn’t want to talk about it, Ivy let it go. She quietly pulled out her phone, opened up her show, and turned the volume all the way down.
Emmy scrolled on her phone for a bit, until a message from Abriella popped up at the top of her screen.
Got good news and bad news. Which do you want first?
Emmy raised an eyebrow.
Is she finally going to spill?
She replied: Good news.
Abriella texted back: I’m in love! Bet you didn’t see that coming!
Emmy blinked in surprise.
That really was good news.
She replied: And the bad news?
Was it because she’d married James so quickly in this life? Had she set off a butterfly effect and changed everyone’s fate?
On the other end of the line, Abriella asked, “Has your husband come home yet? If not, I’m coming up. I just got back.”
A few seconds later, the doorbell rang and Abriella burst in like a whirlwind.
She threw her arms around Emmy, rubbing her cheek against Emmy’s shoulder with an exaggerated, playful grin.
“Emmy! Congratulations! You’re the new tech superstar, the future queen of innovation! You were absolutely amazing today!”
She hugged her even tighter, giggling. “Let me soak up some of your good vibes. Maybe I’ll get lucky with my own business, too!”
Emmy couldn’t help but laugh, gently pushing her away.
“All right, all right. So you’re in love and you lost your job—are those two things actually connected?”
Just hearing that made Abriella’s smile drop.
She plopped down on the sofa and started venting, full of frustration.
